Ben - I saw Scott Atkinson's request for information/maps of where the
517th traveled. I hope someone can fulfill his request, and if there's a
way, I'd like to obtain copies as well. Bill Meyer, of E. Company, sent me some
text and descriptive info a couple of years ago, and I have copies of a
number of the morning reports and operations reports from
the National Archives (many include six digit map coordinates of the various
locations y'all were), so anything that someone might add will be a great
blessing to those of us who are interested in knowing more about your
experiences. Thanks! mark

Trooper Identification
Hello Mr.
Barrett,
My wife, Yvonne (Downs) Rose
and I think we have identified her father in a picture that was sent to you by
the daughter of John Stonis.
Looking at the picture I
have attached, we think that maybe Herbert Downs is in the
back-row, 2nd from left. Jay Sutcliffe's father is 3rd.
Herbert was only 5' 4"
120lbs. one of the smallest men in H company.
Jay Sutcliffe has
identified the man on the far right, back row, as trooper John
Stonis.
I have attached the email
messages I have had with Jay Sutcliffe also.
We may need your opinion to
help us.
Thanks for your time and the
wonderful web-sight you maintain.
David Rose
Son-n-law of Herbert

Hey
David,
I think it is. That’s pretty neat, my dad was 6 foot so
it gives you a pretty good reference. Write in to Bob Barrett and tell him to
post your father’s name.
The picture that you
sent me is much clearer than the one on the site for what ever reason. I recognized the man on the extreme
right back row, that’s H company’s John Stonis. His Daughter sent in the photo but never
mentioned her dad.
Thanks for writing,
talk to you soon.
Thanks
To: Sutcliffe,
Jay J

Hello
Jay,
I found a picture on the 517th sight of airborne troopers in H
company. Your dad Jim, is identified in the picture I have attached, back
row, 3rd from left.
Yvonne and I are asking for your opinion. Do you think
that might be Herbert Downs standing to the left of your dad? He
would be one of the smallest men, 5' 4", 120lbs, in the company. His
facial features, long chin, sure could make it a
match!
