REGISTRATION FORM

Note to Terry Casey:  Your brother, Jim Birder, is with Bob Reber, our third Bn. mortar platoon leader, in the close up picture, the one in which Jim does not have his overseas cap on and Bob does.  Bob was seriously wounded by an incoming mortar south of Stavelot, Belgium.  He was rehabilitated in VA hospitals but passed on several years ago.  Tom Reber, Bob's son, is an active member of our Auxiliary.  He would like to hear from you.  I recognize the officer in the other picture but can't call his name for sure without some research.  I think it was Woodward or something like that.  He was a replacement, somewht older and commanded one of the 3rd Bn. companies by the time we came home.

Ben,
    I want to wish every mother a very happy and special mother's day
this May 14, 2006.  The best way for me to do this is to attached  a
mother's day message dated 6 May 1943, Camp Toccoa, Ga.  It is typed
with 517th Letter head which makes me believe the 517th had these
prepared for the men to send to their mothers.  What a great tribute to
the 517th.  In case you cannot open the attachment;  It said:

Dearest Mother:
       On this happy day, I want to thank you sincerely for all you
have done for me.  I feel helpless to repay you.  You labored and toiled
for me night and day.  You worked hard to make my life happy.
Everything that's best in life-- I owe to you.  I shall never forget
everything you did for me.

  My Dad signed the message and below his signature is a poem written
by Rev Robert Kearn.  It says:

Mother of Mine.
God's finger painted the dawning
and traced all the sliver there,
But dearer to me is the silver
He laid on my mother's hair

Ah sweet is the light on the waters
and blue are the summer skies;
But sweater and deeper their love-light
That shines in my mother's eyes.

The sun sparkles bright on the dew-drops,
That lie in the rose's vase,
But heaven's own beauty awakens
In the the smile on my mother's face.

Oh God the works of thy fingers
Are wondrous and so Divine;
But this is the earth's rarest beauty--

That wonderful MOTHER OF MINE!

Hi!  Hope all is well with the Barrett  Family.

I am sending by U.S. Mail a letter and Certificate of Appreciation (Half size) sent to me this past week from the Department of the Army and signed by the Chief of Staff and Secretary of the Army.

The document is entitled, "Freedom Team Salute".

With the coming of Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day it would be appropriate to use some of the material on our website.  If not, file it with my book, "A Veteran's Remembrance".

Again, my wholehearted gratitude to you and Bob for the excellent contribution you render to keep the 517th Parachute Combat Team memory alive.
