HI BEN
PERSEVERANCE PAYS DIVIDENDS! AFTER 4YEARS OF INQUIRIES, READING EVERY MAIL CALL, AND YOUR EXTENDED EFFORT ON HIS BEHALF, MY SON HAS FOUND A MAN WHO KNEW HIS GRANDPA AND KNEW HIM VERY WELL.
BRETT HAD A PHONE CONVERSATION WITH NACE COHEN THIS AFTERNOON. MR. COHEN AND POP SERVED TOGETHER IN 2/BN S-2 (6 or 7 MAN GROUP) THROUGHOUT THE WAR. IN FACT, THEY DOUBLE TEAMED A GERMAN M.G. POSITION THAT WAS GIVING E CO. TROUBLE IN THE AUF DER HARDT WOODS ON 1/21/45, TOOK IT OUT, PURSUED A SURVIVOR INTO ENEMY TERRITORY AND TOOK 6 PRISONERS.
BOTH GOT THE BRONZE.
PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO GET INFO. ABOUT A RELATIVE THAT WAS IN THE 517TH SHOULD GET ALL THE FACTS ABOUT THAT PERSON FIRST, AND THEN ASK QUESTIONS. BEN WILL GIVE ADVICE IF YOU TREAT HIM RIGHT. THE MEN AND WIVES OF THE 517TH ARE ALL GOOD PEOPLE. IT'S ALMOST A SURE BET THEY WILL HELP YOU IF THEY CAN.

Hey Ben,
I know I am not a member of the 517th, but I plan to go to the Toccoa, reunion in October. & don't get the idea that no one reads the mail calls, I read them all, the first thing I do when I get home from work. A day without mail call is like a day without sunshine. Best 517 Regards, Morris

Hey Ben, that would be great to see you there, it is supposed to be bigger & better this year, the museum is now at the train station, & should be nicer. Keep up the good work, I have visited several military web sites, but they don't compare to the 517, it is PERSONAL, & not so much into statistics, & record keeping. I had met Mr. Fulton at Savannah, & was sorry to learn of his passing. I still have not heard from Mrs. Coffman I hope she got the CD I had made of Fritz. Best 'H' company regards, Morris

Jean-Loup Gassend

For all the 517 veterans who were in southern France,
particularly men of E, G and I companies.

My name is Jean-Loup Gassend, from southern France,
and I have already had quite a lot of contact with
some 517 veterans  (
http://517prct.org/bios/moles_m.htm  ).
I am currently preparing an oral history book about
the liberation of southern France, and would like to
phone some of you who may remember interesting details
about the period of august 15th until early september
1944.
There is nothing to be afraid of, I would simply
like to do a phone interview: you can tell me some of
your stories, and I can ask you some question, and I
will tape the conversation, to be able to re write it
afterwards. (I have already done this with many FSSF
veterans)
As a side note, it is a lot of work for me to do
this, especially as I am a medical student so don't have
much free time, so it would be nice if I could get
some cooperation from a few of you. It is to preserve
your memories remember.
Any of you who would be interested to tell me your
stories, you can send me an e-mail with your telephone
number at jean-loup@gassend.com   , I will then phone
you myself. If you do not want to be phoned, you could
just tell me your stories by email, but from
experience I know you will tell me more details by
phone, so I would prefer to phone you.
I have gone over many old mail calls, and would
particularly like to be able to phone:
Elsworth Harger
Gene Brissey
Howard Hensleigh
Joe Mackiewicz
Dick Havill

If any of you are interested, I can show you an
example of what I have already put together concerning
the battle at St Cezaire, from interviews with locals,
and replies I got in the past on mailcall. (I think Mr
Hensleigh may be interested to see this)
Once again, there is nothing to be afraid of, I
would simply like to hear about what you remember over
the phone.
I will be very glad to be able to contact any of you
who have a good memory. Send me your phone number at
jean-loup@gassend.com  .
Since I know that some people don't always read mail
call, or only briefly look over it, I will send this
message to Ben several times so that I am sure most
people read it at least once.

Thanks a lot

Jean-Loup Gassend
