 Hi Ben,

This is a reply to Claire Giblin.  Claire you are absolutely right in regards to the Vets telling their stories.  In one of the Mail Calls, a Trooper had mentioned something I’m sure he thought was nothing special, but to me it was. It made me realize why my father had a little ritual that took place every Christmas Eve, something we still laugh about.  I would take it a little further and encourage the Troopers to post their photos too.

The picture that Elaine Berger sent in “Foxhole Rest”, my father is on the right, resting on Odas Sweet’s arm.

And as always thanks Ben and Bob for all you do.   I sure do appreciate it.

Thanks, Ben.  I'd like that.  I was sorry I was only able to come to the dinner.  But glad I got to at least say hello to you and Gen. Seitz.

Take care,

Mike

Ben:  Diane Austin is the wife of justice Austin and the daughter of Francis (Frank) Wakeman, one of the six members of the S-2 section, 3rd Bn. 517.  Jan, Red Meline and I met the whole Wakeman family, including Frank's wife, Francis, Jr. (a paratrooper), Diane, her husband who is honored here, and their 4 sons at a Pow-Wow in Flandreau, SD where Red and I were sanctified by the medicine man and told the crowd of Frank's exploits in the 517th.  Frank was a grandson of Chief Little Crow who headed one of the Sioux tribes.  Taking after their grandfather, the 4 Austin boys won all the foot races.  It is good to know that the descendants of our troopers are carrying the 517th flag into the future.  Howard Hensleigh
