Ben,
In line with the comments made by Claire Giblin.  I too have watched all of Ken Burns "The WAR".  I watched them with my twelve year old son as so he can see for himself the sacrifice that fine men like you all made for all generations to follow.  Adam has been raised with the knowledge of the sacrifice our family made with his Uncle Pfc. Danny Ogniewski, Co D being KIA in Sospel.  He is very proud of him, and is a sort of young World War II history buff.
Although the programs followed only a small group of veterans, Adam was able to see the bigger picture of the War, as was I.  I echo the fact that Claire mentioned of the importance of your own separate stories.  Your organization is blessed with so many men and women that are dedicated to keeping those memories alive.  I am proud to be associated through my Uncle's service with all of you fine GENTLEMEN and LADIES!  Danny's service medals and picture along with his boots are proudly displayed in our home as a daily reminder that freedom is not free!
May GOD Bless this Country, its Servicemen and Women, all Veteran's and all your families.

Sincerely,

Daniel H. Curtis on behalf of Audrey Curtis (Danny's Sister, My MOM)

Dear Ben,  With the cataracts out of my left eye I see a little more clearly and the VA finally changed computer hook up vendors here; so, with that improvement, I am a little more back on the track.

Quite a few 517th (including the 596th and 460th) visitors have darkened the VA doors here to say hello and spend a few hours discussing the outfit and its doings.  On one theme we all agree many times over -- the outfit was our home and the troopers in it our family.  That is why we went AWOL from the hospital to get back to it.  That is why we still hang together after more than sixty years.

God bless you, Bob and all the others who make it possible.

Howard Hensleigh

Jansson Family

Our family would just like to reiterate our heartfelt thanks to the Barrett family, the hosts of the Washington reunion, the Kane family, and also to Trooper Walsh who helped escort Dad to all the events.  Dad is doing well, although we wish he could be more mobile.  I think the reunion was wonderful therapy for Dad, and I wish it would carry over more than it has for him physically and psychologically.  He is more consumed than ever with the health of his wife and our mother who suffers from Alzheimer's than he is in his own health.  (My own personal humble opinion.)  In any event, Thanks to all who organized, helped, coordinated, contributed, and formulated this reunion.  From, the entire Jansson family,  THANK YOU AGAIN.

Pat Seitz and Allan Greer

Dear Ben:  Seeing the pictures that Irma sent brought back all of the special memories of the incredible visit/experience she, Arnold and Marie gave Dad, Alan and me in the summer of 2005. The words awe-inspiring, outstanding and beyond all measure do not do justice to the work they do to preserve the memory and educate about the sacrifice and heroism of the men of the 517th during the Battle of the Bulge.  May the Good Lord bless and keep them.  Sincerely, Pat Seitz and Alan Greer

Each company in the 517 had a picture like the one you fixed up for Mail Call.  Each picture was taken at the same place at Toccoa.  I pulled up my company picture, Hq. 2nd Battalion and at first I thought it was the same picture you sent.  What you thought was a statue is the smoke stack on a barracks building just behind the picture.  It does not show on the picture you sent but if you can read the printing on the bottom of the original it will identify the company  commander and probably the company name.

As I remember all of these pictures were taken just before we left for Jump School.  I am sure I was not happy getting dressed for a picture after living in shorts and shoes for 17 weeks.

Hi Ben and all troopers.

I have always loved that poem that Nacho wrote.  I enjoy reading your emails and continue to send them to Rick (Nacho's and my son), as he has now moved to Michigan.  Brrrr!

I am happy to be in the Auxiliary and Claire, if there is any help needed in typing or anything else, please let me know.

Hi Ben - Re: Mail Call #1407, I couldn't download the photo well enough to see the details. But, I do recall Lt. E.F. Brooks was, at one time, C.O. of E Company. My dad served with them and has a photo noting "Lt. E.F. Brooks Commanding" that still hangs on the wall of his home office. mark
