Hi, ben,

I have a question about the city tour, which i hope you can answer, or find out for me. Will we be  going into the Arch or the museum there as part of the tour?  If so, how long will we be there?   My mom (Virginia Jorgen)  and i are arriving a day early and want to go to something special.

  Thank you,   Nancy Boian

Chris Lindner

 Hi Ben and Nancy

I am copying Donna Lee on my answer to this question because if I am incorrect Donna will let me know.

The city tour is not planning on stopping and going into the arch or the museum which is underneath the arch.  It will be driving by the arch.

If anyone would like to take the time to go back and go up in the arch and visit the museum that would be done on there own time.  The other thing that also might come into play with visiting the arch is the Mississippi river that is now flooding.  I do know that the flood gates are up and the first street next to the river is now underwater and that is why we have to cancel the river boat cruise and dinner and the people that signed up will be getting a check back in there welcome packages for this cancelled event.  If the Mississippi keeps rising it could go as high as the arch steps (which it has done many times in the past years, the l993 flood was the worst I ever saw in St. Louis and the river was past the arch and there was no way of touring it at that time).

In short if Nancy wants to tour the arch I would suggest she make the time to do so on her own with her family members (if the flooding does not go that far) and I would also suggest after she does that (it only takes about 2 no more than 3 hours if that long to tour and go up in the arch) I would suggest she goes to the St. Louis Zoo.  The St. Louis Zoo and the San Diego Zoo are probably the 2 best Zoos in the U.S. and the Zoo is on the way back from the arch to the hotel and you can get there on highway 40. I am sure the hotel will have information on both the Arch and the St. Louis Zoo.

 I hope this is helpful.

Thanks,

 Chris Lindner

Hi Ben:

The floods will not affect the airport or hotel.  Even the worst flood of 1993 never affected the airport (Lambert Field) where you will fly into.

Now as far as the jump team they are using a small airport Smartt Field in St. Charles, Mo which is over the Missouri River (which at this point is not flooding) but the Mississippi is also up in St. Charles.  I talked to Teri today and she said that the people called her from that airport and said the flooding is supposed to affect that airfield that they would be jumping from but that the water would crest on Monday and then start to recede and that would give us until  Sunday for that airfield to be OK.  It just depends on the weather in St. Louis and the cities higher up on the Mississippi.

We will just have to see if the midwest keeps getting rain and go from there.  We cannot do anything about the weather but hurry up and wait and see what happens.

Hello Ben, Ray Estrella here. I just received the latest issue of the Thunderbolt. Looking at the pictures brings back many fond memories of the time spent with special friends like yourself in Palm Springs. I am very disappointed that I will not be going to the St Louis reunion with my brother-in law Ruben. I have had for some time now, a prior arrangement to take care of my 5 year old twin grandsons during this time frame. My  daughter Reina, and her husband Rolando, are going back east into the Boston area for a much needed vacation. I am looking forward to our next reunion in Palm Springs in "09, and more importantly, Mr. Leo Deans 110th Jump !!.Both Ruben and I had a great time going with Leo, Ben and "The Prez" Darrell, to Parris for Leo's 109th jump.  You may or may not have heard the story about Ruben and I being left off at a shopping center in Hemet by Leo and the guys, and then being picked up by the assistant to the Chief of the Soboba Tribe. The tribe has both a reservation and a Casino in San Jacinto (about 30 miles from Palm Springs).  The Hummer that is pictured in the Thunderbolt with all of the ladies is the tribal chiefs.  He has invited the 517th to have whatever activities we want at his tribes reservation. Please provide me with Leos and Darrell's email addresses. Thank you--Ray

Ben,
Just got my Thunderbolt yesterday, and Wow!  What a wonderful
edition with so many pictures.  Please forward my many thanks to Claire,
and Helen for their hard work on this.  It is a thrill to get the
Thunderbolt every quarter.

Ben,
Great picture of my Dad,  Bud Curtis, with Major Don Fraser at the
Portland Reunion.  That was the first time the two had met since the
war.  Major Fraser saved my Dad's frozen hands and possibly his life
when he gave him his warm dry gloves at the Battle of the Bulge.  Their
visit at the reunion was a great time, and for us as their sons and
daughters to hear first hand about the glove story.  It brought back
great memories. Thanks

Subject: Message to add to newest Thunderbolt Issue

Good Morning,

I wasn't sure who to send this information to but my grandfather, George Kennedy, who served in the 517th 460th "D" battery, showed me an article in the most recent Thunderbolt issue titled "Lucky Heirs". It stated in the article that Lucky never heard from "Buxton" afterwards. George wanted me to let you know that shortly after the war he sent a Christmas card to Buxton and he did sent him a return card and it was from Alaska. He also stated that when he tried sending him one the following year he didn't receive one in return. So Alaska was the last known place for Buxton.

If you have any further questions please let me know and I would be happy to get the message to my grandfather George for you. He loves your publications and he is always searching for other members from "Dog" Battery! He has come to every reunion and plans to attend more (as long as his buddies are still going). Thanks again.

I love this site! Absolutely, the best place for all things 517th. I am a
reenactor/living historian. The unit I am in charge of, has decided that our
permanent unit impression, will be that of F Company, 2d Battalion, 517th
PRCT.

We would all like to join the association, as friends. We would also like to
know, if there are any Vets in The MD, VA, southern PA area, that could
serve as an advisor to the unit?

This would be an amazing chance for us to have a one-on-one relationship
with a 517th Vet, and get the strait scoop!

I have been awaiting an outcome of business trip to Spain and Turkey we have been negotiating towards the end of June and first of July.  We are still trying to get the principals tied down as they are global business travelers and hard to pin down to get them together to meet in Turkey after first stopping and returning to Spain.

The Spaniards do not do business in August.  So there is a business crunch of time available.   What I am trying to say is that it is unlikely at this late stage to get to the conference with the air fares at the last minute. Is there anything I can do or donate that I can send with Patrick O'Donnell?

I really looked forward to attending.
