Hi, Ben
My Father was Frank Hupman 460th C. I was wondering if you could
help me with some information. Last year I believe I read in the
Thunderbolt a story someone had sent in about while they where in Rome they
found a lake and went swimming and come to find out it was the Popes
private lake.
I will be going to Rome for Christmas and I would like try to
see the Popes lake, that my Father went swimming in. I would appreciate your
help. If you could recommend other places in Rome that the 460th C where I
would love to be places where my Father was.
Thank you,
Marion
Hupman
Ben,
Please let Mike Kane know what wonderful pictures he posted on
the website of Sospel, Col des Braus and Nice. It brought back a lot of
good memories of my brother and I taking our father to see these sites, and
hearing him tell us some of the stories of his experiences there. I
especially enjoyed seeing the cafe at Col des Braus, and remember visiting with
Phillip the proprietor. He really loves the 517th.

President Kennedy announced to the U.S. people today that the Soviets have built atomic missile bases in Cuba. “Kennedy spoke in a grim emergency nationwide radio-television address in which he disclosed that, despite past Soviet assurances to the contrary, offensive atomic missiles sites are being built in Cuba and Soviet jet bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons have arrived there,” reported the San Antonio Express on October 23, 1962.
“Kennedy outlined a seven-point program for fast military and diplomatic action to stop Cuba from being built up as a Communist launching base against the hemisphere and sent a letter to Soviet Premier Khrushchev calling for a halt,” continued the story. “Kennedy warned in his speech that any atomic attack against any nation in the Western Hemisphere would bring full retaliation against the Soviet Union.” While the American people had previously realized that Cuba posed a threat, this was the first time the country learned that the Soviets had placed nuclear weapons on the island.
