Ben:

I don't know if you ended up in Berlin on Occupation Duty after conclusion of hostilities but many of the 517 men did.  In order to pacify many who could think of nothing other than "when do we get to go home" started education classes.  I took a number of courses and have attached copies of certificates for two of them.

I also signed up for an art course but failed to graduate.  I knew they had scheduled nude models for the class.  By the second day the instructor suggested I give up my position to someone that would probably show more promise.  I think if I had been given more time I could have been another Picassos.

 Ben:

If you live long enough some strange things occur from time to time.

During the Christmas Holidays I attend the funeral of a fellow I started working with in 1949 and continued to work with until retirement in 1980. After the funeral we had lunch and I began a conversation with a fellow sitting next to me at the table. It turned out he was with Army Service Forces, Fourth Service Command headquartered at Camp Mackall N.C.  In fact he said he signed the Field Order that sent the 517th overseas.

He remained at Camp Mackall throughout the war and was in charge of guarding the railroad crossings and bridges over which the train bearing President Roosevelt's body would pass.   Attached is the Field Order an attachment of soldiers from Camp Mackall were responsible for in NC.

Ben:
  Do you have a need of assistance in getting information from "official" reports and onto the website?  I was looking at the casualty reports and that section of the website seems to indicate there are some more reports that need to be transcribed.
                                           **********
Michael sent this FYEO,  however, it might be time to act. I have copies of morning reports and because of my present circumstances, it may be time to pass them on to someone able and willing to transcribed them. See message from Bob.-Ben
Bob Barrett

That would be great.

 For the Casualty reports, I posted everything Clark Archer transcribed.  The problem is that I think he created this info by looking at the Morning reports, one by one, and summarizing the names of everyone who had casualties day by day.  I would love to have a volunteer spend time going through the Morning reports to finish the job.  But it could be difficult, since there are hard to read, and Clark knew a lot of the names and events.  But if we have a volunteer, that would be great.  You would have to send batches of the morning reports to that person.  They should know what they are getting into.  But even a little at a time would be great.  Also, I would prefer to get it in electronic form, maybe in a spreadsheet, rather than in handwritten notes.  Then it could be made searchable by name.

Happy New Year

I have had some recent problems with my service provider that affected my image gallery and caused me to hold off on posting any new material.

Now that I think those problems are under control, I am pleased to release a "catch-up" of the Wings issues that I have scanned. Here are 3 more issues, to bring me back in line with my "one issue a week" promise.

Additionally, I have to give the proper credit to Ed Phillips who served as editor for the Wings issues from December 1985 to the fall edition of 1988

I hope you enjoy!

...and the article that includes a full index of the issues that have been scanned to date;
