Subject: MailCall No. 1975 - 517 PRCT - March 8, 2010

Mail Call: MailCall@517prct.org

Administrivia:

When I sent out MailCall #1974 (twice), I still got a LOT of “Message Rejected” errors.  I have a feeling that no one received it.  Too bad, as it was a pretty good MailCall.  You can read it here:  www.517prct.org/mailcall/1974.htm

According to Gmail :

Sending limits

In an effort to fight spam and prevent abuse, Google will temporarily disable your account if you send messages to more than 500 recipients or if you send a large number of undeliverable messages. If you use a POP or IMAP client (Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail, e.g.), you may only send a message to 100 people at a time. Your account should be re-enabled within 24 hours.

I still have a few ideas, but it may take a couple of tests to get it right.   You can always read all past MailCall online at www.517prct.org/archives, but if you find that you are not getting MailCalls for a while, send me an email and let me know.

I don’t really have that much news for this MailCall, but I thought I should sent it out as is, just to try to see if I can get this sent and received in one piece.

I am also afraid that in trying to copy Ben’s address books, I may have lost a few addresses, and I may also be sending 517 MailCalls to people who previously asked to be removed from the mailing list.  So if you want to be added or removed from the MailCall list, just let me know.

Please note the new address for MailCall:  MailCall@517prct.org  I will also continue to search Ben's gmail and AOL accounts for a while as well.

Donations for any programs involving the 517th should be sent to our treasurer Leo Dean at 14 Stonehenge Lane, Albany NY  12203.

Now please start sending news.

Regular MailCall news:

Greetings Bob and 517th family.  Being the nephew of a Buzzard [PFC George Cavnar, Reg. H.Q.] I have been a regular follower of 517th Mail Call for several years now.  Uncle George suffers from Macular Degeneration which has all but robbed him of his sight.  I print all mail calls and send them via Priority Mail to him in Akron Ohio. His degenerative sight problem will not allow the use of a computer nor can he drive. The Vet. Admin. has furnished him with a special viewing apparatus designed for those with severely impaired vision.  If the font of reading material is of normal size he can actually use his viewer to read what is written.  He has been reading Mail Call now for over two years, thanks to the Barrett’s and he really enjoys keeping up with the news and stories pertaining to the 517th.  He was one of Boom Boom's Demolition Platoon guys. He has spoken highly of Dick Seitz, Bill Boyle, Don Fraser and John Alicki just to mention a few.  I called him this morning to give him the sad news about Ben and I think it caught him off guard. He sends condolences to the family.  I let him know that Mail Call is in capable hands with Bob.  I had the pleasure of meeting both Ben and Bob at the Salt Lake City Reunion. Ben recognized me by name tag as a regular contributor to Mail Call and shook my hand and made me feel welcome.  I'm sure he would want us to "soldier-up" and keep putting one boot in front of the other and move on.

Recently I have been getting Mail Call by going to the "archive site" as I stopped getting Mail Call to my computer for some reason a while back.  Bob when you have time please put me back on the regular delivery list.  [ Jerry Wofford ] and my addy is < wofford.j@sbcglobal.net  >.

This is one of those somber occasions in life that must be accepted as God's will.  I have only happy memories of Ben, R I P.

Hi Bob,

Just thought I would let you and the 517th family know that Myrle has been in the hospital since Friday.  They were going to implant a pacemaker today but his blood count is too low so they will give him a transfusion and do the procedure tomorrow.  He is feeling pretty good and his spirits are up so that is a good sign.  We aren't sure if he is going to be able to attend the Palm Springs reunion but we are hoping that everything is set to go.

Meet the Troopers:

Reminder:  I am still looking for more biographies (and autobiographies) about 517th troopers, so that I can put them in the “Meet the Troopers” section of the web site.  It is an important part of the 517th history.  There’s no time like the present to make a few notes about your life.  Start simple.  You can always add more info and more photos later.

 http://www.517prct.org/bios.htm

Material submitted is completely up to the soldier, or to their family and relatives.  Take a look at the biographies already submitted -- Jesse Darden's bio is a great example.  So is Merle’s, if he would send me some better pictures.   http://www.517prct.org/bios/merle_mcmorrow/merle_mcmorrow.htm

But feel free to be as creative as you like.  It's your story.  This information can be as long or as short as you like.  We would like to see any or all of the following items:

¨      photos - then and now

¨      memories from 517th training and WWII

¨      biography - before and after the 517th

¨      comments, philosophy, opinions

¨      anything you want to say to your friends and relatives
