Hello
Some members came back on the Madawaska Victory, some on the Oneida Victory, many on hospital ships and a few may have swam. Will try to include Bob Cooper's download in this mail to prove that he wasn't one on the swimmers.

I am not using blind copy method for this Mail Call and so you will see all the addresses (about 170). Check yours to make sure that it is correct. However , you wouldn't be receiving this mail if the address was wrong. Check it anyway?

The remarks by General Hawley in last "Mail Call" was sent to us by John Alicki (BoomBoom).
Ben

Ben...The name of the ship (a 2 stacker) was the Madawaska

Victory...I recall as we were sailing up the Hudson River in
New York, small craft pulled along side.. They had bands with
some dancing girls...It seems to me one trooper dove off the
ship with an effort to swim over and get tangled up with the
gals...Don Street, G Company...

Maybe this will clear up some of the controversy over the ships we came home on.

Anxious to read 'bout the Hurtgen - I think that is where I(and a few others) had our first warm night, and meal (potatos, Beef and milk) Newly battle
field commissioned, Lt. Bob Morgan showed us how to butcher a dry cow . Hensleigh missed out on that one, Ha.

All this talk about memories makes me sad.  There is so much I cant remember.

I remember breaking my leg in jump school and making my last jump ithe last of January. Oh yes I was one of the early members of Co E in Toccoa.  My 6th jump was into Southern France.  I remember the wet and cold of Tennessee.  Eating C rations in a ditch in Italy beside a dead German artillery horse.  The tall white officers with the short Japanese men of the 442 inf Regt relieving us in Italy.  Jump into the fog in southern France.  Looseimg the baseplate of my 60 mortar during a river crossing.
Transferring to Hq 2 and trying to satisfy the Sgt Major and Operations Sgt with exactness in spelling etc in typing after action reports.  The cold and snow of the bulge.  Late Christmas dinner with so much food for the few of us.  I guess there is a lot that I dont want to remember.    Dick Hammel.

Hello Ben,

This is Martha Berg - Oscar's Secretary (ha  ha) - anyway your message came by way of our great friend Dixie Welborn (Brian's
Secretary (ha ha).  Thanks to Dixie, we are receiving your Mail Call as she forwards it to us.  We will have to get with msn perhaps chastise Bill Gates - about our non receipt of your mail call which we enjoy so very much.

Incidentally, we received that information from General Hawley ( Hope I have his name correct)- which was a boss of my now retired nephew Maj. James Rainey.
The General had sent it to Jim and he felt it was important enough to forward it on to us.

Anyway, Ben, until we can find out the hold up on receiving Mail Call direct, Dixie will forward it to us. We hate to change our e-mail address as it means notifying so many people, so if we can get msn on the ball, it will be much easier.

Thanks for all you do,

Martha Berg

Subject: Schwartzkopf Quote

from Frank Every now and then it takes a true military mind to come up with a classic quote!

In a recent interview, General Norman Schwartzkopf was asked if he thought there was room for forgiveness toward the people who have harbored and abetted the terrorists who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks on America.

His answer: "I believe that forgiving them is God's function. Our job is simply to arrange the meeting"
