Dear mr Barrett,

Thank you so much for your email.

Yes, I'm duly received the article of the " Stars and Stripes,"  .

I can read the document - Fantastic !

I received also the photo via our computer from Mr Flannery. He does a wonderful job !

I don't think so that I will can use the photos for my book. On the screen of the computer, the photos are not to bad but it's not the same when we print it ! So' I'm very happy to have these photos from Manhay.

I'm also in touch with Mr Mike Spano. I just received a letter from him with his souvenirs of Manhay. It's very interesting. I will print it in my new book.

Do you know some people that can read the french for you ?   If yes, before print the book I will sending you a chapter of the book with Manhay and the attack of the Night of 26-27 December 1944.  (I hope publish the book for May 2004).  Actualy, I have doing 50 % of the work but every times I add more and more informations.

The book will be print in French only, but I hope that it will be translated into English and I will be very happy to give the translations to all people that gave me help in the researches.

I stay in touch,

Sincerely,

Your Friend, Eddy Monfort

From:    JOEMACK610

Hi Ben,
I got your message concerning the roster. No, I was not with the unit at the Bulge, I was on my way back to the states being discharged for minority. I left the unit right after we came down from Pierra Cava and they went into bivouac. The unit was sent from the bivouac area and broken up I believe. I think I was in England for Christmas 44, because I was first discharged in February 45.I had spent some time at Lichfield England before embarking for the U.S. Eddie Zygnowicz had his foot blown off while we were on a patrol out of Pierra Cava, he stepped on a mine. Tony on  Esparza was wounded with me at St. Cezaire August 22, 1944, he rejoined the unit after his recovery from his wounds, and was wounded a second time at the Bulge.

                                       Joe Mackiewicz
                                                  ***************
Joe inquired as to why he was not listed on our 1944 Christmas roster.
Joe was probably the youngest member of
the 517th. He was wounded in So. France and when they found out that he was under age, he was sent home. Reenlisted in the Airborne as soon as he was old enough.

   Dear Ben,

Thank you for your email, it was great to hear from you.  We do hope that you are well at this time, too.
Thank you for the suggestions, we appreciate your help, very much so. Saying that though, we have already checked out your web site. Because our web site is linked into yours. Also we have had other veterans from the 517 suggest the site to us.  It has been usefull to us we can assure you on that.
We do have a few questions that we would like to put to you please, if you do not mind.  Well here goes,
1.  What was your rank ?
2.  What was your own job within the unit ?
3.  What were your own personal weapon(s) ?
4.   Did you use any British weapons or equipmaent ?
5.   Did you use any German weapons or equipment ?

If you would like to look at out web site,  here is the address
http://www.thunder-from-heaven.fsnet.co.uk
Though of course it is about the living history group we run, and not about our work as Historians.

              Our very best Airborne regards,

               Colin and Ian Dewey
