Ben,

I cannot thank you enough for passing on word about Charles Keen.  "Keenie" was a very close friend of my grandfather and great-uncle throughout the war.  Mr. Keen was close by my grandfather when he (my grandfather) was wounded by a mortar shell during the Bulge campaign, and was able to remove him from the action and see to his care.  My grandfather, great-uncle and Keen enlisted together, served together and left the service together, all through no small effort on Keen's part, who made sure the three of them knew each others' whereabouts and conditions at all times when they were wounded or in the hospital.

We all have a very great debt to Charles Keen, most especially those of us who were not there during the war.  There are very, very few texts on the 517th which do not contain some interview with Keen.  He was obviously very open and active about sharing his experiences well before many had healed their wounds enough to do so.  As a result, much of what the world has learned of the 517th's exploits is enriched by his anecdotes and recollections.

Thank you again,

Matthew Myers

Some where in the mountains of Italy we needed to have
a radio relay station on a firing mission. so Sgt.
Messinger took Layton Mabrey and I to the foot of this
high mountain pointed up and said see that high peak
set up there, well on the way up we came across a
family having lunch and were invited to eat with them
so we did. Well to finish the story we were relaying
fire directions back to the batterys for about thirty
minutes when I told Mabrey we had better move. he ask
why, well we had only been in the  new position for
about fifteen minutes when four or five rounds pounded
our first position. LUCKY MOVE! fire mission completed
with no causalties.

P.S.  Enjoyed the story about the Olive Grove and
ETC.Good job Howard.

Ben, We have our first reservation for our Kissimmee reunion. Wild Bill
Boyle signed up for the Space Center trip as well. Mildred saw her
oncologist last week and he said for her to see him in six weeks. Thanks
for all your prayers. She is feeling much better. A/B Bob
