When the strangers come to visit the old sergeant, they offer keepsakes from more than half a century ago: Faded black-and-white photos of themselves in uniform, yellowed newspaper clippings and dog-eared cartoons of GIs Willie and Joe. They recount a war story or two. They say how much they appreciate what he did for them.

Hi Ben,
I am very sorry to hear about Tony passing away this past September 6th. I was not aware that he had any serious medical problems, as I said a while back, I had written him a letter which he never did respond to, so I don't know if he was sick or just didn't receive it.
Tony was a very good trooper, my only regret is that we did not stay in touch often enough. My sincere condolences to his wife and children. I will have a mass said for him at our local church this Sunday.

Dear Troopers, Family and Friends - Europe 2004 60th Anniversary

I have been negligent in my “Company Clerk” duties for several weeks, due to all kinds of excuses--most of us are very familiar with all those problems (“do not apologize-it is a sign of weakness,” John Wayne, 1953).      So...back to the Europe 04

I have the cart before the horse. I find (logically) that those developing travel for  planes, trains, buses, hotels, food, and receptions must know exactly (within reason) how many are to travel. Don Lassen, and his Static Line Europe 04) has a solution for that problem. His edict is “send money,” (he sez $100.00 a month or other payment) until the total  $ 3,000 is paid (before travel). This, as well, resolves problem for the travel representative who cannot plan without the figures. The amount covers airfare, ground transportation, most food, and social events.

Unfortunately, I have blissfully wandered on with no idea of  the total numbers that may be involved in either our Southern France trip, or Don Lassen’s Static Line (England, Normandy, Holland, Bulge) portion of the trip. I planned on the Frice family for 5-7, and one individual planned on approximately twenty (20) ??? of his family. I sent Don Lassen
$ 5,000 to initially cover the frice family for the Static Line tour.

It appears that the only means to insure that we are developing numbers is with a deposit of moneys. Therefore, I am opening a bank account in the name of the 517th, and I recommend (as Don Lassen requires) an initial $ 100  deposit to firm up your desire for your individual travelers to attend the Southern France portion of the trip. I will make an accounting of all funds. All funds are returnable up to six months prior to the trip and all will  be covered with “travel insurance.” Those that desire to make the Static Line travel must contact Don Lassen individually and immediately.
The tentative schedule for the trip is:

        May 23-31, 2004 - Southern France
        June 1-15, 2004     Static Line

Again, the reason for the May-June date is to obtain the best group fares for flights, lodging and travel-and to avoid the European vacation period. I am mailing more details to those who have previously indicated they desire to attend one or more of the above trips.
I will forward a Southern France application form with additional information, accompanied by a Static Line application. If you do not hear from me, or if you have not previously contacted me please do so immediately.
