Ben, I'm looking for information on the death of the following soldier:

PACE, LEDLIE R
Pvt B 517 PIR

My cousin Richard Baysinger was on patrol with Pvt Pace when he was killed. I'm attempting to reconstruct the details the days leading up to his death and then the wounding and evacuation of Richard Baysinger a short time later. Also trying to find out when Richard returned to duty with the 517th.

Any information would be appreciated. Thank You,

Don Gentry

Good Morning Ben ---

I walked out to the mailbox just now, and there on the front page, was a young picture and a "today" picture of Bentley Linscomb.   A half page article about him with the following info:  I quote from the paper:  "  He was with the 517th during WWII.  He was an "aid man", a kind of assistant medic.  He was 29 and by far the oldest member of his battalion - he was called "Pops" because he was so "old".  He said he got his first taste of heavy fire on a drive thru Belgium - he was at Bastogne, and said he was also in Germany."  unquote

Do you have this man listed as "lost"?   I can find his address as he only lives across the Sabine Rv. from me in a very small town in La..     I'm sure it would take just a few minutes for you to check this out.

If you would like this article, I'd be happy to send it to you - just send me an address.

I knew George Monkhouse when we were in the 3rd platoon together.  I didn't know him well but I always thought he was too young to be in the army.  I was 18 when I went into the 3rd platoon and he looked so much younger.

Cecil Doty probably knew him better than I did.

A pleasant Veterans Day to all:
On Nov. 11 1944 many 517th infantrymen were high on a mountain between Sospel and Italy. The Germans had been pushed into Italy. I know that this is not news to many if not all remaining 517th Troopers. The memory that stands out the most vivid in my mind is the American aircraft flying in the valley below us in celebration of what is now Veterans Day. I don't think this is a dream. Does anyone else remember? A few days later we marched through Nice to flat spot where we set up a "tent city."
