Hi Ben and all the
troopers.
Lubic was asking about George Monkhouse and his
age. He was too young to be in service, I believe he wasn't too
truthful about his age when he enlisted, The Company found out
about him being too young when we landed at Naples and his mother was trying to
get him out, however on our first day in combat near Grosseto, Italy was
birthday and he became old enough to be in the Army. I don't remember if
that was 17 or 18 years of age.
Monkhouse was the scout for the third platoon
and was very good at it.
While we were at Peira Cava Monkhouse was on guard
duty and it was raining , so he hung his rifle upside down on a tree and set
down near by with his rain gear over his head. When heard a person
clearing throat, he look up and saw a German Officer. The German wanted to
surrender. Monkhouse said wait until I get my rifle. After getting his
rifle he took the Officer to our CP,
Monkhouse was a good trooper and think
him often.

Hi
Ben,
Thank you for your e-mail today and your kind words about my column. We
did
have a problem with the August edition as Don forgot to put it in and is
very
embarrassed about it. Everybody thought I had died or something - but no
- I
am still here.
It was good to meet you in Atlanta in April. David and
I enjoyed the reunion
immensely. Last Sunday was our Remembrance Day and
myself, David and his son
James, the three generations went and laid a wreath
on a War Memorial in
remembrance of my father who we lost during the war.
This War Memorial is
special as it has my father's name inscribed on it.
I
shall certainly keep an eye on your website in the future.
You take care of
yourself Ben, there are not many of us left.
Best regards,
Deryk.

it.

How I
found the 517th page: unknown
Comments: I made the Jump in
Southern France. I found one roster with CO I names. I recognize some of them. I
have also checked the KIA list and found a few names that I was with at the time
we were in battle. Ididn't find my name on the CO I roster. I was wounded in
Southern France and was sent back to the rear. Could this be the reason why my
name isn't on the
Roster?

I just cannot get over
how rotten the V.A. has been to so many disabled
veterans from just about any
war you want to choose?? They told me that
they didn't believe I was ever in
an airplane let alone jump out of one,
This after my 13th jump, last one in
combat, breaking my back in 5
places??? I wonder what I was doing in a body
cast for 4 months in a
Hospital and convalesced for an other 5 months??? Yet
all the people in
Washington want to be on T.V. showing there respect for
Veterans??? It
took me 51 years to get them to see my service connected
injuries, Then a
Broadcaster like Tom Brokaw has on his program The Fleecing
of America,
because some of these Veterans are getting 100% disablility?? now
instead
of for all these past years.???Trying to make a living with
there
injuries. Tom

Hey Ben I ran across
something that I feel should be forwarded to all of
our guys that have had
Knee replacement surgery: I fly once a month to
(Indianapolis-Las
Vegas-Indianapolis) and have found if I take with me
about 8 magazines , to
sit on when I began to feel pain in my new knees ,
I place them under me on
the seat and the pain goes away right away and
doesnot come back.
Amazing to me such a simple remedy, It changes the
angle in the hips and
knees to the floor?? This trip takes about 3 hours
nonstop from
St.Louis. Tom
