Subject: MAIL CALL NO. 396
517TH PRCT December 15, 2002
Hello,
It would be a big help for Bob
Christie if you would register for the reunion as soon as possible. Forget the
aches and pains for they will be better or worse by January 19.
I have
received a poem from from Marie Spencer and Chris Linder but it is too
long for this Mail Call. I will try to put tit in a later Mail Call. I
think that it has been been in previous Mail
Calls.

I am considering canceling the trip. For the reunion, I have 49
probables.
Of those are 34 who have paid. For the trip I have 11 paid. I
think I
have until Jan. 10 to cancel. I have sent an email to confirm that
date.
I think I could arrange transportation for a group smaller than
thirty
but I would have to do business by phone and it would cost more
for
transportation. I guess the majority of reunion attendees prefer to
visit
and fellowship with their buddies and not have any
extracurricular
activities other than what they arrange for themselves. That is
O.K. with
me. Lots less headaches. My wife wants me to stop doing this
reunion but
it seems to be needed, and I really enjoy it. Bob

How
To Avoid Hoaxes And Scams Online
Learn to recognize and avoid email pranks and
jokes, as well as far more damaging viruses that can wreak havoc on one's
computer. Make sure you have anti-virus software on your computer and keep it
up-to-date. Do this every month, unless you hear about a specific new virus
threat, then check the Web site for special updates or alerts. When in doubt,
don't download. Don't download files from strangers, but also be careful
about unexpected or suspicious files from people you may know, e.g., Melissa
virus. Scams: Never give out your password or billing information online.
Always be cautious giving out any kind of personal information online as you
could be the victim of an online email scam or identity theft. Hoaxes: If
something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Just like in the real
world, a healthy dose of common sense goes a long way.

Hi Ben,
I saw the name and a picture of a man named
Donahoo in one of your emails. That is a family name of mine and not a
frequently seen name. Could you forward this to him. I would like to
ask about his ancestors.
Also,
in one book on the paratroopers, it states 19 killed 126 wounded
and 135 injured. What is the difference between wounded and
injured?
Also love
reading your emails. Nacho (Vasquez) is not doing well, he has stopped
chemo since it was doing no good. But I was able to get some of his lost
medals replaced. My Son Rick Vasquez is looking forward to going to France
and attending some of the ceremonies in 2004.
Thanks again,
Nila Vasquez

Hi Ben I got a letter today from Sarah Tayler RR1

passed away recently. She states he told her he was a PFC in the First Battalion
but passed before she could get more info. I gave her your e mail address in my
letter to her. She got my name and address from the internet but didn't give me
an internet contact. There is reference to another Walter Graham in the roster
but a different middle initial. If anyone can help her please contact her and
hope she checks in on our mail call. Al

The nuclear Aircraft Carrier, U.S.S.
Harry S. Truman, CVN 75 and the ships in her Battle Group got underway from
Norfolk, VA the other day for an extended deployment. Just as the lines were cast
off, this announcement was made throughout the ship over the speaker system:
"Peace on Earth to all men of good will. All others, Stand
By"

517th page: From a search engine
Comments: I am trying to find
out if a family friend served with the 517th. He stated it was the 517th,
however he was ill at the time. His name was Gene Allman (1SG ?) from Richmond,
Indiana. If anyone could give me dome feedback. I believe he was with unit since
its inception. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He stated that he
received the Silver Star, however the records were destroyed. Thank you, Chris

Subject: Fwd: what an American is, ....?
>You
probably missed it in the rush of news last week,
>but there was
actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published
>in a
newspaper an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any
>American. So an Australian dentist wrote the following to let everyone
know
>what an American is, so they would know when they found one.
>
>An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German,
Spanish,
>Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian,
Mexican,
>African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Australian, Iranian,
Asian, or Arab,
>or Pakistani, or Afghan. An American may also be a
Cherokee, Osage,
>Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, or one of the many other
tribes known as
>native Americans.
>
>An American is
Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, or Muslim.
>
>In fact, there are
more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan.
>
>The only
difference is that in America they are free to worship as each
>of them
chooses. An American is also free to believe in no religion. For
>that
he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs
>claiming to speak for the government and for God.
>
>An
American is from the most prosperous land in the history of the
>world.
>
>The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of
>Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each
>man
and woman to the pursuit of happiness.
>
>An American is
generous. Americans have helped out just about every
>other nation in
the world in their time of need. When Afghanistan was
>overrun by the
Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and
>supplies to
enable the people to win back their country.
>
>As of the morning
of September 11, Americans had given more than any
>other nation to the
poor in Afghanistan.
>
>Americans welcome the best, the best
products, the best books, the best
>music, the best food, the best
athletes. But they also welcome the
>least. The national symbol of
America, The Statue of Liberty, welcomes your
>tired and your poor, the
wretched refuse of your teeming shores,
>the homeless, tempest tossed.
These in fact are the people who built
>America.
>
>Some
of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September
>11,
earning a better life for their families. I've been told that the World
>Trade Center victims were from at least 30 other countries, cultures,
and
>first languages, including those that aided and abetted the
terrorists.
>
>So you can try to kill an American if you must.
Hitler did. So did
>General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and
every bloodthirsty tyrant in
>the history of the world. But, in doing
so you would just be killing
>yourself.
>
>Because
Americans are not a particular people from a particular place.
>They
are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom.
>Everyone who holds
to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.
>
>Pass this around
the World
