Subject: MAIL CALL NO. 398 517TH PRCT December 17, 2002
Hello,

Thanks to all for letting me know that they received the photos in last Mail Call. Most seem to have gotton them without any problem. The photos reminded those that were there about the cold and snow.. It was the coldest winter in Europe for the preceding fifty years.

Subj: Questions from Father
Date: 12/16/2002 5:23:26 PM Eastern Standard Time
From: lory.curtis@jordan.k12.ut.us
Ben,

My father, Bud Curtis has two questions.  First, he received 3 purple hearts while assigned with the 517th.  Is there any way to find out dates, and places those awards were issued?  Second, my father would like to know what medals and awards, if any the French government gave to the 517th?  He has heard of a Liberty Freedom Medal that WWII veterans have received from the French government.

Thanks for your help.

Lory Curtis, son of Bud Curtis

Subj: 517 wings background patch

From: eharger@chartermi.net

Hi Ben:

Great job keep it up! Bulge pics came thru here great, I could almost feel the cold!
A friend in Belgium wants to know the colors of the little patches for our wings. I know the 517's was blue with a silver edge, what was the color of the 460th. and 596th.?
Anyone out there that can help, thanks.
More later, I'm afraid some of you old warriors are getting senile. Acknowledging the request for brevity, and fully appreciating the effort required for our news letter, I'll try
to educate those of you piecemeal. I have a sound clip of
Dan Rather interviewing a FEMA agent ff the 911 tower attack during which the agent says," We were sent to NY the eve of Sept. 10 to handle the attack on Tues".!!!!!!! or words to that effect.
I will forward to anyone interested! as I said more later.

Ben,
The entire message and photos came thru just fine via AOL. Good job-and I appreciated your jumping on the museum for their recent mis-identification of the 517. I will be in FL in Jan (actually will be there several weeks prior on something else). I believe you were listed as one of the "volunteers." See ya and thanks.

I just saw the picture of the 517th moving up to St Vith.  My father, Bud Curtis was with HHC, 1st BN when all of you entered the Battle of the Bulge.  I asked him how he kept warm. He said, “you never stopped moving.”  I next asked him how he kept his feet from freezing.  He said, “ I had on 13 pairs of socks and over shoes (galoshes).  How any of you survived just the elements is beyond me, let alone being engaged in combat.  I remember being deployed to Korea as an Army helicopter pilot, living in a tent, in the snow, in the winter time, and dealing with what I thought were hardships.  I never had it so easy compared to what you folks had to deal with. To all members of the 517th and everyone else that was there, thank you for your service to our country, and making it possible for me to enjoy the freedoms of America.Lory V. Curtis, MAJ, AV, USA (Ret)

     Good morning old friend.
The "old" part doesn't mean "old in age" just being a friend for more than a short time. :-)  Anyway, I don't consider 41 as being old. ;-)
I just wanted to say thanks for posting my petition on the 517th web-site.  I'm sorry to have to ask you this again but, when and where is the upcomming reunion going to be held this year.  I have had 3 or 4, 517th members ask me to please come so they can meet me in person. (some of the ones that I have continued to coorspond with over the past 3-5 yrs.)  Mearle McMorrow and Gene Frice and yourself are three of them.  I'm really going to try to make it this year.  Hopefully, business will pick up by then so I can go.  (business has been worse this year than ANY year since i started my business 10 yrs. ago. even the first year!)  My income will be less than half, this year, than it was last year.  Needless to say, Tammy and I are having to tighten our belts.  The good thing is that we havn't been late on any payments or missed any meals.
       Back to work I go.
Have a great Christmas and New Years!!
       Chris

Subj: Web site stats

From: rbarrett@alum.mit.edu
Dad,

For your info, we have been keeping some statistics on who has visited the 517th web site for the past year or so.  303 days to be exact.  During this time, we have tracked 5732 visitors, from 40 different domains/countries, and from every continent.  I thought you might be interested in the geographic breakdown of what countries have visited the site, so I have attached a picture of the stats.  Unfortunately, anyone coming from a business location (.com) or a network provider (.net) will not show the country, but most of those are US based.
