Ben:  A note for John M. Pastalenic--All of Bill Mauldin's war time cartoons are publixhed in "Bill Mauldin's Army".  There are several reprints the last being in 1984 by Presidio Press, 31 Pamaron Way, Novato CA 94947.  I had one I loved, "Mud, Mules and Mountains" picked up in Italy, but lost swmewhere between then and now.  Howard Hensle

Hi Ben: Thanks for all the “Mail Calls” they are great as always.  I have something I have been thinking about and I do realize that it is a different time and things have changed.  All of you in the 517th were part of the liberation of France.  There have been many accounts of your first jump on Aug. 15, 1944 and we have had many of our French friends write in on your website thanking all of you.  I also have received the “Thank you America Certificate” from the French Government for my Dad’s service to the liberation of France. The thing that is very puzzling to me is that as I watch and listen to the speeches regarding the U.N. coalition for the U.N. regarding Iraq the French Government has veto power to going to war with Iraq.  Please do not get me wrong I do not want to see another war but the fact remains that after the speech from Collin Powell today everyone must agree there is an awful lot to think about regarding this subject.  What I can’t understand is the French Government being so reluctant to get involved with all the evidence that has been given against Iraq.  I know that this is just the beginning of this debate and we will all learn more in the weeks to come.  I guess I just feel that you all were there for the French and now we need them with us now. I just wanted to express my thoughts.   Thank you. Chris Lindner

Hi Ben,

Please add Nacho's son, Rick Vasquez, to the list.  Also, Vasquez does not have an e at the end.  Rick is going to try to go to the Palm Springs reunion in April and will be going to France in 2004.
I would like to mention that Howard H is a wonderful writer, and I'm wondering why he has never published a book on his experiences.

Subj: 517th Photos
Date: 2/6/2003 7:48:03 PM Eastern Standard Time
From: andyhill72@yahoo.com

Ben-

Hi.  I wrote to you a few months ago about my
Grandfather, Harry A. Hill, who was in the 517th B
Company.  I have been doing a lot of research into his
involvement in the 517th.  He died in 1989, so he's
not around to provide any answers.

He took several hundred photographs while he was in
the 517th, and a few weeks ago I spent an entire day
scanning all of his photos.  Yesterday I was looking
through them and realized that there are about 90-100
photos that I can't identify.  Four of them are
attached to this e-mail in a zip file.

My Grandmother told me that while my Grandfather was
in Europe, he met an elderly couple that he really
liked.  She wasn't sure, but she thought that he may
have stayed in their house once or twice.  Two of the
photos I can't identify are of an elderly man and an
elderly woman.  My Grandmother didn't know who they
were, but I'm guessing they are the couple that she
spoke of.

My Grandfather always loved children, and would go out
of his way to do nice things for them.  Two more of
the photos I couldn't identify are of children.  One
is a poor quality photo of my Grandfather in his
uniform, holding what appears to be a little boy, with
a little girl standing next to him.  The other photo
is of another child standing in a path.

If you are able, could you please post these photos in
the newsletter?  I am hoping that someone may
recognize these people and be able to provide me with
some information about them.  Also, since I have so
many photos that I can't identify, if there is anyone
who may be able to help me with that I would really
like to hear from them, too.

Thank you-
Andy Hill

It is most unlikely that any-one can identify 58 year old photos of non members of the 517.

I have been getting emails for almost a year now. My grandfather, Clarence L. George was in the 460th Battery D. I believe he is on the Christmas roster on your website. I have been trying to find anyone who would have been in his particular Battery but no such luck.

Thanks,Brent L. George

My father was an Army paratrooper with the 517th in WWII.  When I put his name in the WWII Memorial Book, do I enter him as Army or Army Air Forces?  There isnt a section entitled airborne.
Thanks for your help on a question that probably sounds really dumb!!,   Sheryl

Ben hope you can use this.  It is some thing  to think about.  I think our Social security would be a lot better if the Congressmen and Senators had to pay into it.  It sounds like you had a good turn out for the reunion in Fl.  I am sure looking forward to June.  I hope this gets to you because I am not to good on this kind of things

I will try to attatch Harry's download with this Mail Call
