Hello,

Fifty-eight years  February 9 was the last day of combat for the 517 Combat Team. The Combat Team had 130 Killed In Action during the Ardennes-Alsace Campaign.  Frank  W. Hayes who joined the outfit at Tocca was the last KIA. I will try to scan and place in this Mail Call the list of KIA's provided to me by Clark Archer. I will in later Mail Calls have similar information for the 450 , 596 and Medical Detachment. We will also place this information on the website.

Howard,
The passing of Bill Mauldin and his "military constructive criticism," was a great loss in military history. I know of no individual (or organization) that had such an impact on those in the military (and all readers). He did so much to raise the moral of the suffering ground pounders and others, and generally may have caused the senior commissioned ranks to reexamine their relationship with their troops whether they liked it or not-and they did not. I can say that having served in almost all the ranks. I don't believe that most knew that Mauldin, following the war, dabbled in political satire and had the same impact upon the pompous politician as he did on the senior military ranks during the war.
I know of no individual who best reflected the real life of the ground soldier.
Howard, I too have a copy of his Italy, "Mud, Mules and Mountains." It would be a wonderful handout for our OKC gathering. I wonder about the republishing rights?
I too dabbled in military cartooning of sorts-I will try and come up with an acceptable tribute.
I have a friend that attended the Arlington funeral (with pictures). Will get copies.
          Gene Frice, F Co.

Ben, Am working updating the roster. Joe Stim changed his email address
to:joestim@optonline.net. I am going to rewrite the roster in excel for
the benefit of my Printer. I am planning on an updated roster mailing in
04. Meanwhile I will have some copies(maybe 25 or whatever you suggest)
to bring to Oklahoma City. These will have around 300 to 400 changes made
to the 02 roster. Instead of including email addresses in the main
roster,I will have a separate section for a listing of those on email.
That way,I will be able to include telephone numbers on the main roster
for those who are not on email. What do you think about this? Let's have
some input from anyone with suggestions. I have reserved the same dates
at the Ramada in Kissimmee for next year. The room prices will be the
same. Next Wednesday we will be driving over to Sebastian to see Ed
Flannery. I enjoyed seeing all our buddies and families. Hope we get a
bigger turnout next year. Bob
