Hello,
"REMEMBER, a generation such as ours must agree to remember certain things in a certain way and refuse to be persuaded or made to change otherwise others will
modify, interpret, or change what we did see and do. If we are not vigilant about preserving our own history then others may try to do it by attempting to correct our memories. Then how will we and our families know who we were, what we did, and when, and the significance of our actions. Give this some thought!"
The above was written by Tom Cross in his Static line column in 1989.
Our website is an attempt to preserve our history and we hope to soon make some significant changes so that we will be more able to achieve Tom's wishes.

Hi Ben,
Thank you for asking about my Dad... I have received some information, and I plan
to call Fred Harmon... I have found a lot of information in my mothers attic... Lots
of papers , pictures and information about the 517... I hope to scan some of the
pictures and information tomorrow... I will send you what I have and maybe you
will know some of the people in the pictures.. I found some old papers, one was
a paper that says certificate at the top, and is
certified by a Lieutenant Colonel
McLaughlin US Army for the secretary of the army for army records... It
say something about duties for personnel records pertaining to Maurice
White and then says he is authorized for the following decorations and awards and list all of the
medals and awards... I hope to use this paper to receive a set of his medals from
the government... I also found a paper with General orders number 49 at the top
of the first page and then it list award of silver star , and bronze star medals..
It has the names of about 20 or more men from the 517 and then it tells what
they did to receive a medal... Most of the information is very touching... You
will probably know some of the men., and maybe others looking for information
would like the information.. Some of the names are Dallas, Hughes, Goyne,
Brown, Kandrick, Hensleigh, Guy, Mills, Hughes, Dallas, Kane, Kleineandorst,
Markle, Zygnowiez. I also found a Memorial Service book July 9th 1944 Italy..
Very very touching. As you can see I have been doing some homework... It is
so exciting to have the help from your page and the other members of the 517
for help.... Thank you sooooooooooomuch...
Becky

Subj: Fwd: Fw: Do we really need France's support?
Date: 2/23/2003 11:02:57 AM Eastern Standard Time

Forwarded Message:
A letter home from Bosnia:
Dear Dad, A funny thing happened to me yesterday at Camp Bondsteel {Bosnia}:
A French army officer walked up to me in the PX and told me he thought we
Americans were a bunch of cowboys and we were going to provoke a war in
Iraq. He said if such a thing happens, we wouldn't be able to count on the
support of France.
I told him that didn't surprise me, since we had successfully completed the
mighty Panama Canal that they so dismally attempted and failed to finish.
That we rescued France in World War I, World War II, Vietnam and the Cold
War, their ingratitude and jealousy was due to surface [again] at some point
in the near future anyway. I also told him that is why France is a second
rate nation with a third-rate military power under a Socialist economy and a
bunch of pansies for soldiers. I additionally told him that America, being a
nation of deeds and action, not words, would do what ever it had to do, and
France's support, if it ever came, was only for show anyway. Just like in
ALL NATO exercises, the U.S. would shoulder 85% of the burden, and provide
85% of the support, as was evidenced by the fact that this French officer
was shopping in the American PX, and not the other way around. He began to
get belligerent at that point, and I told him if he would like to, I would
meet him outside in front of the Burger King and whip his butt in front of
the entire Multinational Brigade East, thus demonstrating that even the
smallest American had more fight in him than the average Frenchman. He
called me a barbarian cowboy and walked away in a huff.
Dad, tell Mom I love her,
Your Loving Daughter, Mary Beth Johnson, Lt.Col.,USMC
