Dear Ben,
Just a quick note to say thanks for the great job with Mail Call. I will see you in Oklahoma City in June. The Dardens have my snail mail en route to them now.
I love to see how many lost sheep you find with this important and valued e-mail service. I hope you find great satisfaction with these "finds". To witness so many successful finds is a privilege that I am grateful for.
Mr. Bob Christie, please send me your new e-mail address, please. I have a question for you if you don't mind.
Thanks again, Ben!

Good morning Mr.Barrett.
I just wanted to tell you thanks for putting my name at the top of the "517th Family & Friends" roster. Although I'm not a WW2 veteran, (I wasn't even born untill 1972) I'm honored and proud to be a 517th grandson. All of you guys are the ones that deserve the respect and glory for fighting to keep the stars and bars flying. I credit all of you for the freedom that my family and I share everyday.
Thanks again and have a great day.
Sincerely,
Christopher M. Liddell

I m a navy officer (Born in 1971) in Toulon in Southern France.
During my holidays, i make lots off researches about the US paratroopers in the
area off Le muy anD Draguignan .
For Five years, with my brother, i visit all the battle field and i question the farmers in the
area to have historic informations and to collect all the battle field relics (Helmets, harness T5, bags, parachutes, ammunition belt, ......).
Two weeks ago,
I succeed to find a marvelous camouflaged M1 carbine A1.
On the stock, we can read the following name : SCHIERS.
The camouflage with green, black and beige colors is typical from the 517 PRCT.
in the 517th Parachute Infantry Combat Team Christmas 1944 in France, i find the name Schiers Melvin C. HQ company 2nd Battalion.
Do you know if is it possible to have more informations about this man?
I will be very happy if you can find photos off Schiers (And his paratroopers friends) during the WW2 and about the Schiers family.
Thank you.
See you soon and sorry for my english.

Maine Ed Chief Calls for "Sensitivity"
Stories that some Maine teachers and other education "professionals" have
been taunting the children of Reserve and National Guard heroes caused the
state's Education Commissioner, J. Duke Albanese, to issue a memo to
superintendents and principals calling for greater "sensitivity" in dealing
with the pending military action in Iraq and the call-up of reservists. How
nice.
What he should have done was call for the heads of the lame-brained
"educators" who are telling these kids that their mommies and daddies are
war-mongering monsters.
You can read Mr. Albanese's pabulum at:

This is very interesting. I knew of Iraq's attempt to build a reactor (with a lot of help from The Frenchies) but didn't know "the rest of the story" (with apologies to Paul Harvey!). Another good reason to stop this madman!

Subject: Yesterday's Men Today
Dear Ben: Recently, I received a flier in the mail regarding a correspondence course for front-line supervisors in the trucking industry. The sponsor was Herbert Jeff and Associates. Under the heading of "Who is Herbert Jeff" it lists his accomplishments in his illustrious career in the trucking industry. This list leaves you impressed. Herbert Jeff is quit a guy, but it left out a few things I remembered.. I then remembered that I had a copy of the address delivered by Mel Zais on August 2, 1980 at the 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion reunion. His closing remarks were: "In closing, I would like to say a few words to the wives and children who so loyally attend these reunions, who so tolerantly and lovingly put up with the little boy in us. Please continue to understand us for in the routine of our daily lives we often feel buffeted by circumstances, laden with responsibilities, curbed by custom, inhibited by expectations and demeaned by large and small failures. We look back on what we did and how we did it–we look back on the challenges we met, the hills we climbed, the loads we carried, the fears we overcame, the suffering we shared and we are proud. We seek some way to return and draw sustenance form each other, to recapture the glory and the pride that comes to some of us for very short periods in a lifetime, to relive those halcyon days and to say to ourselves, ‘No matter what today or tomorrow brings, yesterday, I was a man’ "What the flier on the correspondence course left out was that Herb Jeff carried "Woody" Woodhull’s forward observer radio on our attacks and patrols and transmitted 460th firing instructions that saved our necks and made taking those hills and prisoners a little easier. He was up there with us, but wasn’t awarded a combat infantryman badge for it. This is a tribute to the many young men who became men in the 517th in the heat of training and combat, and who were better men for it as they carried on in all types of work that made our post war world a better and more productive place for succeeding generations.
