Ben, I would be remiss If I did not thank retired General Dick Seitz for his kind comments concerning my description of the Battle of Bergstein. So, thank you very much Commander, Seitz, for those words and for everything you did for us way back then.

Dear Ben,

Yes, I received this message from you.  I also tried to leave a message in the guestbook earlier today from a public computer at the local university, and I see that it was posted.  Hopefully I will hear from someone.
I told my mother that I had written to you, and she advised me that she remembered Dad corresponding with Adam Radzik, Phil Lovell, and Mel Edwards (Lubbock, TX) who used to send newsletters to him.
Again, thanks for having this wonderful website!

A proud daughter (obviously named after her father), of a very brave man.

Martin Savidge of CNN, embedded with the 1st Marine battalion, was talking with 4 young marines near his foxhole this morning live on CNN. He had been telling the story of how well the marines had been looking out for and taking care of him since the war started. He went on to tell about the many hardships the marines had endured since the war began and how they all look after one another. He turned to the four and said he had cleared it with their commanders and they could use his video phone to call home. The 19 year old marine next to him asked Martin if he would allow his platoon sergeant to use his call to call his pregnant wife back home whom he had not been able to talk to in three months. A stunned Savidge who was visibly moved by the request shook his head and the young marine ran off to get the sergeant. Savidge recovered after a few seconds and turned back to the three young marines still sitting with him and asked which one of them would like to call home first, !
the marine closest to him responded with out a moments hesitation " Sir, if is all the same to you we would like to call the parents of a buddy of ours, Lance Cpl Brian Buesing of Cedar Key, Florida who was killed on 3-23-03 near Nasiriya to see how they are doing". At that Martin Savidge totally broke down and was unable to speak. All he could get out before signing off was "Where do they get young men like this?".

  Hello Ben
We finally rec'd our first letter from our son. In it he says: '' By the time the Marines release the Iraqi POW'S to us they are well-indoctrinated. They are as meek as kittens and they are scared. They watch us intently to make sure that they see the next hand signal. When they get a signal, their response is immediate".
No earth shaking news here, just thought it might be of interest to someone.

Ben,

I received this tonight. Listen to the recording! All Americans should hear this young lady and thank God for the freedom we have because of our brave military men and women. She tells us all what happens to those who speak their minds in Iraq!

This is good...

This tell us in no uncertain terms, why we are in Iraq, it brought tears to my eyes.

Subject: An Iraq-American Tells It Like It Is!

If you are a Chicago area resident, you've probably heard about this
incident on the Don and Roma call-in show on WLS.  If not, you'll
appreciate hearing it and perhaps you'll share it with others.  It's quite moving.

Here's what happened.  Don and Roma's son is an F18 fighter pilot (and ex-Blue Angel and local Chicago celeb), who is stationed
somewhere near Iraq now.  An antiwar protester emailed Don and Roma stating that he hoped their son would die if the US goes to
war against Iraq. It brought tears to Roma's eyes, but she still read this hateful email on the air.  After hearing it read, an Iraqi-American

girl called in and this is what she had to say. (I've attached the file)  Don and Roma are going to replay this file everyday until the war is over.

Dear Mr Barrett,

Just a few words to say you Hello and asking you again an information.

I hope that all is fine for you and family.

All is O.K. at home. I have actually my baby Raphael. He is funny and he will have next week, six months old.

The writings of the book are on good way. I will close all researches and probably the writings to December.  I will take severals weeks to does the maps etc...  The book will be print for May 2004.
I have severals pages on the 517th and I just received two testimonies, via friends, about men of your regiment. But, I would like to receive their authorisation for publishing it in the book.

Do you have the address of Mr. Joe Calder ?   I think that he is member of the Company "H" !

I have also the story of William T.Webb. Hq/517th.I have his address from a few years ago. It was at :
4155 Kissimmee Park Road
Saint Cloud
FL. 34772-7619.

Can you tell me if this address is always correct ?

I would like to relate a maximum of informations on the battle of Manhay. I will print the souvenirs of Michael Spano I/517, Floyd Ziolkowski Hq/517th and the article published in the "Star and Strips".  I hope just included again the two stories from William Webb, Joe Calder and maybe one more about a soldier from the Company "H"...

I'm really impressing when I talk about the 517th in my book. During two days, tanks and infantry tried to liberate the village of Manhay, but without success.    In a terrible night, following or under the artillery shells, your unit liberated Manhay on about one hours.  It way really crazy. The men of your unit are really heros.

The book relate the events of Baraque de Fraiture and Manhay Crossroads, Grandmenil and the village around.  I have approximatively 80 testimoniesof veterans from differents units (2nd - 3rd - 7th Armored Div. - 75th, 106th Inf. Div.- 82nd Airborne Div. etc...).
The book will have for title : "The witness relate us..." It will be again print into French but if you desire, you will can print a part of it (into English) on your web site (about 517th). Why not !  It will be with a big joy to give my informations !

Sincerely yours,

Your friend Eddy
