Dear Mr. Bollinger:
I was recently copied on a response you wrote to Mr. Gene Frice concerning the outrageous comments made by a member of your facility, Professor De Genova, concerning his wish to see our forces harmed in their action against Iraq. I do not speak in any way for Mr. Frice but I wanted to tell you that I don't know what bothers me more, an immature and unstable Professor's comments or the facile comments of a University President blowing off these outrageous comments by offering up First Amendment privileges for Free Speech as an excuse for his own inaction
I don't see this as solely a First Amendment issue. Certainly the temperament and moral character of your faculty is of concern to you. I would hope that your job description would also include evaluating the competence, character and quality of your staff. If so, I am incredulous that this teacher's comments to students, if even at an informal "sit-in",would not provoke some sort of disciplinary action on your part. Certainly a University should encourage a multitude of divergent ideas and opinions, but this kind of drivel is pure vitriol and speaks to the instability and unsuitability of this member of your faculty. Because of his close interaction with students is precisely why he should cause you great concern and move you to greater action than defending his First Amendment rights. What about the rights of Students to get a quality education unencumbered by faculty with political agendas and unstable character? I think it is possible to be both a staunch defender of the Constitution and a responsible executive of the University. Your letter to Mr. Frice is attached below.
Sincerely,
Wayne Cross

Ben: There has been so much about the battle of Bergstein with my poor two finger typing I'll try to put my comments in, Gene Brissey, Howard Hensleigh., Bob Cooperm and Gen. Seitz, all have made outstanding commentrs on The Battle of Bergstein. The mine fields,Muddy hills and poor weather. Second Battalion , 517th was really put to the test , that was one bad night.
I was then Col. Seitz radio operater that night, As we enter the valley of Rall river, using foot path and trails we received Small Arms, Mortars, and Artilley fire. Message was sent to leading compaany to pull back to the military crest of the hill and dig in to hold. Just as the battalion begin to organize, we were ambushed on the right frank by small and MG's. Those that were not hit begin to leave there position and head for the mine field which was to our rear,
Col Seitz told me to dig and he would be right back, Last time I saw him on the hill , he was trying to stop the move to the rear. In no time I had a fox hole that would cover two but not to deep. Just then I had a Lieutenant move in to the fox hole and ask if the radio was working? two messages to the CP advising them of what was going on.
I started to leave the fox hole to find Col. Seitz and he told me to return to the fox hole I had the only radio working on the hill. I kept asking the CP if they had heard from Col. Seitz? The Liuetenant kept request to move off the hill, and told to hold at all cost. We didn't get the word to move off the hill until about nine in full day light. there was nine riflemen , Lieutenant and my self. The Lieutenant space the rifle men out by calling names until only thr lieutenant and me. He then said OK Wyatt go. I was casrrying an SCR 300 Radio and just as I got to the white tape to follow though the nime field he pass me, I would say I was the last 5l7th Trooper off the hill and though the mine field.
I would sure like to rember the Lieutenant name but he did receive an award for his actions. Lt White my Platoon Leader inform me that I was being recommend for an award but I never seen the write up or the award. I left the 517th at Joigny and went to Berlin with the 82nd. jusst one more thing the 13 Airborne mess the unit records.
This is the longs me mail letter I've wrote , Bud Wyatt, Headquarter 2nd Barttaion.

Researchers, genealogist's and plain curious can now use the Internet to check more than 50 million historical records at the National Archives, from Civil War battles to family immigration files.
The service will be popular with veterans in particular, because of all the information related to military action, casualties and POW's.

Ben:
A note to Bob Cooper: Bob, although you may knock your writing skills you did a fine job telling us about "Your Battle of Bergstein." I'm glad you were one of the few who survived that mess without getting blasted, which I assume is the case. Had I not been the victim of an 88 I problem wouldn't remember 8 Feb. I even screwed that up by saying in one note that we attacked on the night of 8 Feb. I was in a MASH hospital that night, actually outside trying to sleep on a stretcher. The next night I was in a hospital in Paris. No doubt you remember the first night that you slept on a real bed after the miserable muddy affair around Berstein.
