Hello,

We have received a notice from our president ,Allan Goodman, that he will be unable to  come to the reunion. He is going to be okay but wont be able to travel for a while.

Among recent photos on our website are over 200 send in my Mike Kane Jr. His father was in D company. The photos are excellent but we need help in identification.

Subj: Computer setup

From: PRCT517

Dad,

Now that I have made arrangements to attend the 517th reunion in Oklahoma, I think I can also solve the PC issue, so that we can have a PC setup available in the hosptiality room, for people to be able to see and try the 517 web site.

Since I am now attending, I can just bring my own laptop and set that up in the hosptiality room.  That will save the expense and the setup complications of renting a PC.  My PC is already set up to be able to run a complete copy of the web locally -- no need to have a phone line at all.  It has a fairly large and very clear screen.

The only drawback is that I will not arrive until late Wednesday night, probably after 10:00 PM, so the PC will not be setup and available until Thursday morning.  I can leave it available all day Thursday and all day Friday.  I will have to take it with me each night when the room closes. (I don't want it stolen.) If the room might be left empty for time during the day, I would like to know if the room is locked.  If not, I could just get a locking device and chain it to something.  I'll probably do that anyway.

All I need are:

- A table and chairs in the hospitality suite, where I can place the laptop, mouse, instructions, etc.  Something the size of a desk or even a folding card table would be sufficient.  I suggest a couple of chairs in case people want to sit and try it out themselves.

- A nearby electrical outlet that I can use to plug in the laptop.  My power cord is only about 6-8 feet, so if the outlet is further away, we'll need an extension cord, but we can probably figure that out when we get there.

I think that's all we need, if you can pass this info on to the hotel.

Thanks,

Bob B.

Ben, Some one contacted me on making a side trip to
Ft. Sill OK.  I can not find that message.  I now have
the information. Ft. Sill is open to visitors.  You
will need Photo ID.  A Jefferson Bus Line leaves the
downtown bus depot in OK City at 10:30 AM & arrives at
Ft. Sill at 12:00 PM.  The return trip leaves Ft. Sill
at 7:35 pm & arrives back in OKC at 9:00 pm.  The Bus
Depot is in down town OKC.  You might have to use a
taxi service to get to & from.  The cost is $61.24 for
2 round trip.  If that person wants to contact me I
will be glad to help them. My e-mail address is
lou@thedardens.net  or I can be reached at
918-423-0706 after 3:30 PM.  Thanks   LOU

Struggled with this decision since returning from the West Coast Mini a
month ago. Garnet managed to hang-in-there and handled that trip pretty
well. However, we believe the O/C Week would be too much for her to
enjoy it. So we have decided that we will have to cancel our
reservations. Darn! We considered that I might come alone, but I finally
had to veto that option .I just can't be away that long and feel
comfortable leaving Garnet here alone. We do regret having being forced
into this action. We will surely miss all the fun (new renditions of
fine, old tales!), but mostly, seeing our fellow troopers whom we have
not  seen for two years or longer." The spirit is willing, but the flesh
is weak ". Have a great time. Faithfully, Bob and Garnet Dalrymple .

Ben-I will not be attending the OK reunion this year.  As much as both Marie and I wish we could-it is impossible.  Marie is recovering from an operation on the spine and has a few other complications that makes recovery slow.  We hope that the reunion is a success and that you all enjoy one another.  Lets hope that there is another and that we all can be there.
Ben, we enjoy the effort that you and your son put in to Mail Call.  We look forward to it each day.  Keep up the good work.  Walt and Marie Rommel

It is one of the most difficult decisions we have made in many a year, but we can't attend the reunion this year.  We had to miss the first three; however, we haven't missed any more until this year.  Our health won't permit us to come.  We hope that the situation will improve and we can attend the next one.  It really hurts!  Don't know which one of us the most disappointed Jerrie or myself.  A big hello from us to those who will be fortunate enough to attend.  Dallas and Jerrie Long

Subj: Storms in Oklahoma

From: louettad2001@yahoo.com

Ben, It is May 8, 2003 at 5:45 PM I am watching TV & a
major storm is tearing through the southern part of
OKCity.  It is a tornado.  1st of May is one of the
worst months for these storms to happen.  We have very
few storms of this type in June.  2nd.  Our hotel for
the reunion is on the west side of OK City.  Due west
of down town.  The Hotel is constructed of steel and
concrete.  I asked the hotel people Monday about the
tornados.  They assured me that their building would
be as safe as most is not more than most.  I have
lived in Oklahoma all my life.  I have never seen a
tornado in Oklahoma.  I did see one last year while in
Texas in the Austin area.  It was very small & I never
saw it reach the ground.  I want to reassure the
people coming to the reunion that I really don't think
there will be a thing to worry about.  I have never
been in a cellar & only once went to a closet.  My
animals kept passing the door & looking in at me like
I was crazy.  Jesse was not at home that time, so he
missed me making a fool of my self.  Just wanted the
people to know that they really have nothing to worry
about in June.  LOU

Hi Ben,

I am looking forward to meeting Bob also.  I will be there with my laptop (Wed-Sat), but have no outside ISP to use.  My company's web access is extremely limited and subject to "timeouts" after extended connections.  Otherwise, I would volunteer it for display.

I think it is a great idea to expose as many as possible to the site and the worldwide web in general.  I think it may help allay fears of the PC.  Bob and yourself have done such an excellent job with the site.  I think you both know this, but you are truly building a lasting legacy and an outstanding reference resource for future Buzzard's generations.

Is there possibly a local college history department that may be willing loan a PC with a nice large display in order to meet and mingle with such historical and interesting Americans as yourselves?  I wish I were in that area to help locate one, but I have no contacts there.  If you need some assistance locating a PC, let me know and I'll get busy on the phones.

I just received a card today from Jim Royer and he is recovering from his bypass surgery and is on the mend.  He has changed his plans from driving to OK, to flying.  We keep in touch via snail mail fairly regularly.

I am also very eager to "re-meet" Howard Hensleigh.  I am sure we met at Ft. Bragg years ago, but I am looking forward to reacquainting myself with him.  He has been a great person to communicate with.

Very best regards to you and yours!  See you in OKC!

Tom Reber

Ben, thanks for all of the help.  This has truly been an exciting time.  I have been in contact with a number of sons of men who served in the 517th PRCT.  I appreciate what you and your son have done with the website.

Ben:

Are you aware the Website is included in the Veterans History Project at the American Folklife Center in the Library of Congress?

Go to www.loc.gov/folklife/vets/   Click on Partners and then click on List of Partners and then click on North Dakota.

They must have gotten the site from the Thunderbolt.

See you in Oklahoma City.
