Hello,

I talked to Al Goodman yesterday. He is getting along fine but it is best for him not to travel for a while.

We have just added some new photos on the website. They should be of great interest especially to members of E and D companies.

Thanks to Mike Kane Jr for the company D photos. Unfortunatly I couldn't find my dad or Ray Levandowski in any of them. Next trip to Ohio I will retrieve my dad's pics from my sis and get them in. Thanks again. Thank you to Ben for your hard work. Just wish the old man would have had the chance to enjoy your labors. The comradeship of the 517 meant everything to him, and he was a replacement! He always looked forward to the meetings.

"After a grueling fight (in Iraq), a company of infantrymen was resting and
opening their first mail delivery of the war.  One of the young soldiers had
received a care package and was sharing the home-baked cookies with his
friends. A photographer with a heavy French accent asked if he could have
one. The soldier looked him over and said there would be no cookies for
Frenchmen.  The photographer then protested that he was half Italian.
Without missing a beat, the soldier broke a cookie in half and gave it to
him."

Subj: A Record of Company "C", 517th Parachute Infantry, In The War Against Germany

When the 517th PRCT was stationed in Joigny in 1945, Captain Charles LaChaussee instructed Private Edwin P. Johnson (better known as EP) to write an account of "C" Companies action since it had arrived in Europe the previous June.

EP's sources for the information in the account were, "C" Company Morning Reports, interviews with the troopers who were still with the Company,  and any other records or orders that he was allowed access to at the Company or Battalion level.

Also he interspersed throughout the account his poetic acumen or sagacity with such poems as "Long Was the Night" or "The Squirrel With the Hobnailed Boots";  plus "Colonel 'Wild
Bill' Boyle at Les Arcs"; plus "Plywood Pete".

One could say this account was primary source material accumulated and assembled soon after the action took place.

EP Johnson was the recipient of three purple hearts, and was with the 517th from March
1943  in Toccoa till the end of the War in 1945.

In 1981, when I first saw this Record, I for the first time knew the name of the village where I was wounded, the several places we traveled or fought thru, and it recalled to me the names and the deeds of my fellow troopers.

P.S.  Another thing that is very interesting is Charles La Chaussee's Memoirs as Captain of "C" Company. It was written in the 1960's or 1970's. It is over a 100 pages.

"Little news comes out of Afghanistan, except when something bad happens
there. In the past few months, several American soldiers have been killed,
but the story fades after a single day. Such is the frustration of the
Americans who are stationed in Afghanistan and their families who are their
only link to the country they serve.

"Patsy McCary, whose son Ronny is a member of the 82nd Airborne has written
'An Open Letter to Our Country' in which she tells a compelling story about
her son and his fellow soldiers in Afghanistan. She encourages Americans who
have supported the troops in Iraq to remember those who are still defending
freedom in 'the forgotten war.'"

Goodbye to Peter Jennings
Let's all say "goodbye" to Peter Jennings. How can a man possibly hate the
United States as much as he does? He constantly finds fault with our
actions
and uses his news program to find fault with our leaders. His thoughts and
actions seem to be aligned to the country where he is a citizen---CANADA.
One
wonders why he stays in our country if it so bad. One reason may be that
here
he can be paid six million a year. Not a bad salary for a person who wants
to
live here but refuses to become a U.S. citizen. How do we get rid of him?
Let's start by boycotting his evening news program. Let's see if we can
spread this e-mail to several million people and all begin to boycott his
program beginning on April 2,2003. I did not propose April 1 as I want him
to
know that this is no joke. If we are successful in our boycott then his
advertising revenues will fall to the point that he will be replaced and be
free to leave our country. Just to show how considerate I am----I will be
willing to support his being hired by a new company---as long as it is where
he can fit in very easily---like France.

Send this to every American in your address book.

I've tune out Jennings since he criticized President Truman for droping the atomic bomb on the Japs.-Ben

Ben,
Mike Kane Jr. was kind enough to send me a disk of his father's pictures as well.  I plan on printing them out and bringing them to the reunion to work on identifications.  Note to the Dardens- I will be overnighting my registration to you Tuesday; I'll e-mail you as soon as I get back from the post office.
