Dear Ben: Jack Castiglione of I Company and a long time member of the 3rd Bn. S-2 Section, is going through a surgical procedure today, so keep Jack in mind. He had prostate surgery some time ago. That did not solve all problems so he is back with the VA today where Jack says he has received good care. Many years ago Jack married a young lady named Betty. She is at his side. When he and Red Meline got together many years later he learned that Red had also married a young lady named Betty, on the same day.   Howard H.

Merle, When I told the Board of Directors that I would try to continue
the Thunderbolt, I was was doing so with two conditions. The first one,
that I could find a printer who would do all the layout work involved.
The second which is equally important, our 517th brothers with sisters
included would supply me with lots of stories, anecdotes, news relating to
the 517th and any other items of interest. At our recent reunion in
Oklahoma City, our new President asked for volunteers to act as reporters
for their individual units.I have two reporters so far, Darrel Egner for
2nd Battalion,
George Rumsey for Hq.1st. As I was visiting with different groups during
the reunion, I overheard many short stories and anecdotes. I wish I had
carried a recorder with me. If everyone who receives the Thunderbolt
could come up with an item once a year, I would have enough material for
three or four years. When the call was made for volunteers to continue the
Thunderbolt, the answer was silence. If there are so many who want to
receive news about their brothers, why aren't they willing to help just a
little? I am considering three issues per year, November,March.,
and July. If I can't get enough solid news, I will cut it to two issues.
As soon as I find a printer,I
will let you know. I have been on sick call since I returned. Someone was
passing out cold germs out there. Friends forever,Bob

Dear Ben & Mail Call,

I would like to express my gratitude to all of those who attended the reunion in OKC and most especially to the Dardens.  It was a fine showing and I enjoyed myself immensely.  Everyone was very welcoming, friendly and eager to visit.

I was amazed by the turnout, although several remarked that this year's attendance was down, I was impressed.  The last national reunion I made was in Raleigh in 1975, so I was eager to experience another after such a long absence.  Well, I am impressed at the vitality and spirit of the Association.  Although it seems a "new wave" of troopers has discovered the association since '75 (no disrespect intended whatsoever), the troopers show the same enthusiasm, pride and brotherhood that I witnessed in Raleigh/Fayetteville, Colorado Springs and New Orleans.

I was fortunate enough to learn more about my Father from people like Howard Hensleigh, Bill Webb, Jim Royer and Jack Walbridge (I Co) and others from the 3rd Bn would look me up and visit with me about my Dad.  I can't possibly name everyone who has helped me along the way, as I am still digesting and organizing what I have learned, but I am very grateful for everyone's help and acceptance.

And even though I don't have to remind those who read this Mail Call (you have already witnessed the benefit of this letter and the website), I have to continue to praise Ben and Bob Barrett for the important work they do, week in, week out.  You guys do a super job.

So now I know you guys can whip the Depression, whip the Axis powers, raise all of us "kids" into reasonably thoughtful adults, survive the rigors of trooper arthritis (from jumping out of perfectly good planes), and travel great distances to put on great reunions.  Yep, Brokaw called it right -- you folks are the greatest.

Regards,

Tom Reber
son of Lt. Bob Reber (HQ 3rd)

Jesse  I just want to thank you, Lou and your daughter for a great Reunion. I know your family worked long hard hours putting it together  I'm sure you are appreciated by all.
Oklahoma City  is a great City for reunions.  Best of all it was only three hours drive from home.  By the way, the weather wasn't really too bad,  a little rain at night, but nice doing the day.
Thanks again    Cecil H. Doty

Ben,I am updating my Mailing list to match the roster.I am finding
incomplete addresses. Does anyone know E.W. Burkhardt of Chicago? He was
in Co.A. Incidently, there are quite a few on the roster with email
addresses only.I can't use snail mail for them. If they want to receive
the roster or Thunderbolt they will have to send me their Mailing
Address. Bob
