Hello,

Just received mail from our president , Howard Hensleigh. I knew that he was going to the VA hospital for surgery on his foot but had no idea that  he was still there. However, he says that everything went well.

We have received many replies to the information about  the 82nd Airborne poster in last Mail Call. Will see what we can do about getting copies.

My favorite poster which I came in possession of during the 1944 trip to Belgium is the poster commemorating the 50th Anniversary of The Battle of The Bulge. The size is 2 ft by 3 ft. I will include a copy in this Mail Call

Hi Kathy,
My father was with Company "C" of the 517th. I saw your posting on the unit newsletter. I will try and go through my father's things over the weekend to see if I can find any photos or mention of your grandfather. Unfortunately, my dad passed away last year so I cannot ask him personally. There are still a few guys left so I am certain you will get some stories about your grandfather.

All the best,

BATTLE of the BULGE

50 years ago, in September 44, after four years of occupation the

Belgian people rejoiced as they welcomed their liberators.

But a few months later, in December 44, the celebrations were

abruptly interrupted by a large - scale german offensive.

In 1994 we commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the passed

events and the G.I. of the lithography was the symbol of the Battle

of the Bulge commemorations:

the snow, is a reminder of the tough weather conditions during the

'44 winter, and the green firs represent the woods of the Ardennes.

In the background, the American flag is proudly floating,

triumphant, after the terrible fight, the rip and tears symbolize the

roughness of the battle.

In the lower part of the poster, the Nazi flag is trampled down by a

determined G.I. walking in the tracks left by a tank.

This lone soldier may be a relative, perhaps a son or a friend who

is courageously showing us, step by step, the way to freedom and

victory.

I love the poster.  "Monk" had told me about seeing it, but he did not
have a copy Will copies be available?  I would love to have one for our
son. He has read so much of the History he has become very interested in
collecting all of the data he can.   Too bad Ben Clayton is no longer
with us.  He had such a remarkable memory of time, places, and people he
gave our son so much detail we had not had before.   (Note:  once Ben.
and A.V. Monroe came to visit us for several days, and that was a real
eye opener for the boys and I!)   What a group!!   I marvel at your
bravery, skill, and valor.!!!                          Keep up the good
work!    Thanks!                 June Huffman

Ben,
That is the poster.  I plan on getting it framed and hanging it
behind my desk.  I am currently the XO of the recruiting battalion in Miami.
I am the guy that gets to interview all the borderline recruits and decide
if they are fit to join the Army.  I think that the poster says what I do in
a very precise way, although not a politically correct way, and I love it.
Although I never served in the 82nd I was with the 3rd Ranger Battalion as
an enlisted soldier.  Thanks again for all your help.

Comments: Sirs: I am sorry that I missed your reunion. I am an avid fan of history and the Airborne. While stationed overseas, I went to many battlefields, some of which many of you fought on. I am currently reading the book "The Battling Buzzards" and it's very interesting. If you all are every back in Oklahoma City, please annouce it. I would love to listen to your stories and maybe get an autograph or two in my book. Thanks for all you've done. AIRBORNE!!!
