Dear Ben,

After consulting with Mary and Beth, Al Goodman's daughters, and a family counsel, the association made a donation to Assistance League of Bakersfield (address: 1216 O Street 93301) Fairly recently Al mentioned to him how helpful this organization had been to him and his family.  If anyone in our membership would like to make an additional contribution I am sure Al's family would appreciate it.  Although the entire family is grieving its loss, as we are, Al's daughters have assured me that Alice has taken her loss like a trooper.  Our thoughts and prayers are with her and the family.  Soft landings.  Howard Hensleigh

Just read Allan Goodman, our recently departed and past 517th Prct President report of Change of Command mentioning Howard Hensleigh as our new leader.
This brings to mind Field-Marshal Montgomery, Viscount of Alamein, British Commander of WWII who pushed the German Afrika Corps (1942) under General Rommel out of Africa and who later in 1944 took part in the invasion of Southern France said in his book, "The Path To Leadership",
"If I had to boil down the whole matter of leadership into one sentence, it would be this:  It is "Captaincy" which counts, or leadership in the high sense, together with the power of decision and a understanding of human nature; in fact, a leader must understand, and then decide and act.  And he must articulate; he must be able to express himself in clear and simple language."
There is no doubt in my mind that Howard is endowed with all the qualities of a constructive leader, and will do an excellent job as "Captain" of our 517th Prct Association.   Congratulations Howard!

Subject: Airborne Demo Team

Ben, for those of you who were at the OKC reunion in June, you will remember the WWII Demonstration Team who posted the colors at the Farewell Banquet.  They also made presentations to the 517th PRCT.  Well you may not know, but the 1st Sgt of the group is from my hometown of McAlester, OK, and is the Finical Officer at our local
American Legion Post.  This, past week of July 03 the Demo Team had jump training for 156 young men.  There was 6-8 who “watched” as they went through some of the training like what we had but not as much. The last 3 days were 5 qualifying jumps.  They were side door with static line hook-ups. The American Legion Hut was used for the re-packing of the chutes.  This team travels the entire world to demonstrate the airborne tactics of WWII.  I hope you enjoyed them in OKC. There is a link on the 517th Web page to get to the web page of the Demo Team.
There you can learn more about these fine young men & what they are doing to honor the Parachute Veterans of WWII.  Jesse Darden, Commander, American Legion, Harrison/Powers Post 79, McAlester, OK.
