____One thing I almost always do when I get a "virus alert" from anyone is check the AOL virus site for information.  Sure enough, the "teddy bear" e-mail is a virus hoax - everyone has the file jdbgmgr.exe on their computer (or most people do).  I don't think deleting it will really hurt anything, but it also is not necessary.

If you want to read what I did, here is the link:

http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus_k=99436#charact

Just thought you'd like to know, and maybe you can make use of the AOL virus site in the future.  Could save some needless worry.

Love, Janice

OPY1:  Hi Mr. Barrett: Thanks for getting back to me. I was able to get information from Mr. Gene Brissey. Although he really didn't know Dad very well which I can understand. I took the liberty of sending him a copy of Dads DD-214 and a few tidbits of what Dad had told me. I was trying to understand why the DD-214 shows the 504th of the 82 as his unit. I know my Dad according to his DD-214 went through jump school in late 1942 which also doesn't fit with 517th unit history. Don Sliker Jr.
Ben517:  I will contact Clark Archer, our historian to find out what I can.Your father is on our 1944 Christmas roster and so most likely was in involved in the Battle of the Bulge.
TOPY1:  Is it possible he was Cadre when the unit was started? As I've said previously he was in Berlin guarding a bank and I could swear he said that some of the guys was in the 517th with were there also. I believe the gave me earlier about 517th men being in the Army of occupation fits. It just the 82nd thing that puzzles me

Hi Ben:

Boy am I having computer problems you may end up getting several messages from me.

First I want to tell you that if you have sent me any "Mail Calls" and they have been returned to you it is because my computer is messed up.  I am hoping that by tomorrow my regular e-mail is working.  Please do not send me anything at this e-mail address at lycos but hopefully bellsouth.net will be working soon.

I just wanted to let you know that finally after 2 years I have found Jess Pipkin who was a good friend of my Dad's.  He moved from the address that "The Thunderbolt" has about 12 years ago.  He remembers my Dad very well and said that my Dad's nickname while he was in the service was "KNUCKLE NOSE".  He started at the beginning with my Dad and also was with him in Berlin during the occupation.

Jess is in the hospital right now having rehab on a knee replacement.  I told him about your website and he was surprised to hear the people I have met and the people I have talked to.  He asked me if I would write you (he will be out of the hospital in about 2 weeks)and have you send him "Mail Call".  Jess' e-mail address is

jpipkin@tol.com       (yes it's tol---texas on line and not aol)

his address is

Jess Pipkin
1498 LCR 778
Groespeck, TX 21785

I guess this goes to show that anyone that is looking for information about their relatives that if they keep searching and be persistent you will eventually find out, gee it only took me 2 years to find Jess!!!!!

Thanks Ben,

Chris Lindner

Ben,
Thought I'd let you know that there is a new book out about the airborne.  The title "Airborne: a combat history of the American Airborne Forces", it's written by Edward M. Flanagan, Jr. and is published by Presido and Ballantine Books.
