Dear Diane: I read your message to the 517th PRCT Web Site and wish to pass
on the following information that may be of interest
It sounds like your Father was assigned to Headquarters Company of the 2nd
Battalion. The Company Commander was Captain Robert Clauer and the 1st Sgt,
was A.V. Monroe.Clauer is deceased and I do not know about Monroe although I
believe he is also deceased. Lt. Jack West was the 81 Millimeter Mortar
Platoon Leader and Lt. "Snapper" White was the Communication Platoon Leader.I
believe they are also deceased. The Battalion Commander was Lt. Colonel
Richard J. Seitz who retired from the Army as a Lt. General. He is very much
alive and well. His E-Mail address is seitz2@webtv.net. My name is Thomas R.
Cross and I was the 2d Battalion Executive Officer. I was a Major at the time
and I retired from the Army as a Colonel.
Your Father may remember my nickname in the Battalion as "Black Tom".He
should know that we are all, who still remain, a very close knit group of
comrades. Give him my best wishes. I will mention his name and this message
when I arrive at the 517th PRCT Mini Reunion in Orlando  tomorrow. Best
Wishes, Tom Cross

DropZone book?

Dad:

If you go to the DropZone recently ( http://www.thedropzone.org/ ), you'll
see that they're advertising a new book, "Beyond Valor", by Patrick
O'Donnell.  He is the guy who organizes the DropZone.  It appears that the
book is a collection of the oral history info from the DropZone.  That
probably means that it has the same stories from Seitz, Gibbons, etc. in it.

Dad:

FYI:

Did you know that, according to one page on the Dropzone (the history of the
13th Airborne) it says that there was a private in the 517th who went on to
become a 3 star general:

In addition to six generals that served in the 13th during World War II,
twenty others were to become generals. One wore four stars, two wore three
stars. One of the latter had been a private in the 517th Parachute
Regiment.

Ben,

Hi.  It is a pleasure talking to you.  The letters from Miller, Stott,
Guenette, Allen, Richard Henry,Carr, Cornett, Brown, were given to me by
Robert Millers son, Jeff Miller.  I am a WW2 Airborne historian and was
putting together a WW2 display at Fort MaCarthur here in Southern
California.  Jeff Miller just donated them to me and said that I would
appreciate them more than he, and they would be put to good use.  Since then,
the group of letters and documents have been throughout Southern California
at many reunions and airborne displays.

PS,

If you ever need any WW2 airborne items for your Palm Springs reunion, please
contact me because it would be an honor for me display the uniforms and
equipment that you guys used.  This stuff needs to be seen and appreciated,
that is why I have it.

Thanks,
Tony

Ben.....      My name is Mark Ellis.  I am the nephew of Tascal Ellis, a
member of the 517th, (WWII, Ardennes)  I am wondering how I would be able
access online the names of those in his company, division, regiment, etc.....
or finding his name associated with the 517th, listed somewhere on the
internet.  I have tried to search for it, but I have had little success.
Thanks for your help, or any suggestions that you may have.Regards
Mark

Ben:
I am forwarding the message that I received from Patrick O'Donnell
regarding publication of his new book Beyond Valor. You will recall that
Clark Archer mentioned this book at the Orlando Mini Reunion.
Pat asked me to pass on the fact that this book would be released shortly
and that he would appreciate my passing this info to 517th PRCT Association
Members. I asked Pat to give me some info so that it could be used on the
517th PRCT Web Site. The forwarded message is for this purpose.
We enjoyed meeting you and your wife at the Orlando Mini Reunion. I believe
the
we were able to find a common ground on various subjects that pertain to the
future
viability of the Association. I was pleased to hear so many compliments about
what you and your son are doing for the 517th PRCT through the 517th Web Site.
Regards, Tom

Dear Tom:

Thanks for your response to my email and willingness to help spread the word
on the book.  Unlike, other books, I kept my slant more or less out the book
and just let the men speak.  Beyond Valor is verbatim the words of the men I
interviewed - its raw, uncensored and captures the feelings and
emotions surrounding war.  The book covers the entire ETO starting with the
Dieppe Raid and touches upon many of the intangibles - such as the spirit of
the independent units. The book broken down by campaign and each contains
several interviews from your men (with the exception of Italy). From a
technical standpoint, every interviewee was recommended or screened through
multiple sources, cross checked with unit journals and other primary source
material, by those the person served with and sometimes even with your former
enemies.

Amen on Messengers, that guy wasn't objective at all and his conspiracy
theories about the destruction of the 551 were utterly absurd.  I also felt
his treatment of your the Col. was very shabby and undeserved.

All the best,

Pat
