Hello,

It is a good idea for all to sign with first and last names to their emails to Mail Call since the new format does not include subject and address.

-Hey Gentlemen,
Having reviewed the 545th continuing outstanding publication of "Ben 517," I will make the following comment. Sometimes, I know we see what we read and sometimes don't know what we saw (or whatever). I suffer that problem constantly.  I commented several days ago that I would assist in the "associate" membership project and will assist where ever needed. I agree our crew of the Barrett's and Bob Cristie have accomplished wonders in their mutual endeavors. I agree they certainly need help. Tom Reber has offered his assistance and I again offer mine. Also, I am sure that somewhere in the "associates" group we will find one (or more) who also would appreciate the opportunity to assist in the project
.
Respectfully,  Your obedient servant,      Gene Frice

Subject: Fw: The C D you just sent to me

Hey Brian   I just played the C D and thought it was great with one
exception???  I wear two hearing aids and even with them I had a very
hard time  hearing the C D   I know there is a volume control at the
bottom of the screen,  I had it turned up as loud as I could,   Any
suggestion how I can get this louder???  I suppose someone with normal
hearing can hear it  O. K. Maybe??  Were you able to get in touch with
John Neiler,  He was 3rd Btn. S-2 Officer in Italy,  Then after the jump
into France Capt Dearing (the regt. S-2 officer was injured and Neiler
was moved up to Regt. S-2??? Being in the reserv he made Major General
before he retired.??    A little story if you  want tro add it O.K.   We
were on a maneuver in No. Carolina (the blue Army always out-numbers the
red Army by 5-to 1)  We were the red Army and  was being runover by the
Blue Army I was driveing for Capt Dearing, we came to a long driveway
leading up to a farm house Capt  Dearing says lets go uyp thast Driveway
Tom,  I said O.K. Capt. but I don't think we will be able to get out of
there.  Dearing says take it anyway, So I did  At the end of the driveway
Dearing jumps out of the Jeep and runs away from the enemy, leaveing me
stranded with the jeep?? I found I had some how lost the rear drive to
the jeep and only had front wheel drive,  The enemy captures me and place
3-4 other of our guys in the jeep and a sargent from the blue army, and
tells me we are takeing you back to a prison of war camp??  We go back
out the long driveway and down the main road, And an umpire steps out of
the side of the road. flags us down an ask where we are going?? Here it
is Lt. John Neiler with his umpire insigna on??  He tells the sargent to
go back to his outfit and he will take us back to the prison of war
camp,The sargent jumps out saluts Neiler and goes back to his outfit,
Neiler takes us down the road and turns us loose to rejoin our outfit ??/
Then Deaing wants to know how I got out of that fix, I was afraid if I
told him The Commander Col. Walsh was sitting there would get Neiler in
trouble, so I said I would never tell?? That might have been my swan song
as for as Capt Dearing was concerned???Tom McAvoy

Another incident Brien   At Toccoa Ga. we were learning the fine points
of haveing our rifle inspected, by one of our Officers,  We were lined up
with our rifles, the officer standing in front of one of us, We would be
holding our rifle in front of us at a( present arms)(this is really a
salut to an officer)( were it not being we were haveing our rifles
inspected)  He would give a command and we were instructed to drop our
weapon as soon as he issued the command??He in turn would grab the
falling weapon, usually quick enough that the weapon would only drop a
very few inches,  A very sharp maneuver if done properly,  The officer
looks over the weapon looks carefully at the trigger houseing mechanism
pushes back on the lever that automatically forces a cartridge into the
chamber (if we had cartridges) Then looks down the barrel holding the
weapon up in the air so he  can see daylight through it. (To see if it is
clean)(It better be clean) then the officer returns the rifle to the
trooper?? Now standing next to me was a solder from the old army,  had
been through this drill many many times, (We are all staring straight
ahead as instructed). The officer gives the command , All of a sudden this
guy from the old army drops like he has been shot???  I couldn't believe
it,  As it turned out when the officer gave the command, the soldier
dropped his weapon and the officer made his grab for it but missed it???
The weapon  struck a glancying blow causeing the top part of the rifle to
tilt toward the soldier,  The sight on the rifle struck the soldier in
the temple causeing him to pass out???? He recovered shortly and we went
on with the drill, but very  concerned that this don't always work-out as
it is suppose to???  Tom McAvoy

This is a first. Two emails in a row from Tom that are suitable for parsatrooper and family viewing.-Ben
Hi Ben,

How are you?  Hope everyone is doing just fine.

I hate to put a damper on the 9:11 thing, but wanted to let you know
that Quoran 9:11 is really "But if they repent and keep up prayer and
pay the poor-rate, they are your brethren in faith; and we make the
communications clear for a people who know."  (M. H. Shakir
translation).  Evidently the previous email is an urban legend.

These are pretty good sites for Urban Legends:

Take care everyone,

Juliana Stonis is correct. I usually check out Urban Ledgens, but this one slipped by.-Ben

Thanks Ben

I read every word in Mail Call.  I still don't know how you do such a wonderful job.  It sure keeps a lot of us together.  Wish I had better luck with the 66 letters we sent out to the 2nd Bn Hq Co persons to contribute articles, etc. to the Thunderbolt.

As to the pictures if I had a memory I would be dangerous.

Best regards,

Darrell Engner
Howard,
Thanks for the guidance-we all need it. Obviously, the first priority concerning the assoc friends of the 517 is to properly identify them. We generally
know who they are and Tom Reber will certainly make it more specific. One problem to be worked out with Tom will be to avoid excessive duplication in the mailing process (one unit member with five or more kin (as in my case, Ernest Gilbert and many others)-it would be costly.
Also, possibly we need a email tree or something like that to cover the majority of our members who are not on internet.
Regards my friend and hope you had a good week end-the healing process continuing ?

Gene is correct. That is why I am relieve to pass this project on to someone as capable  as Tom Reber. -Ben
