Hello,
A
couple items I would like to make special note about in this mail. We have
included correspondence from Merle and David Berry about a program that Mr.
Berry is seeking information about it. We also have placed on the website
information about a new book by Pat O'Donnell Beyond Valor. Pat is
the web
master for The Drop Zone and he is a best friend of the
Airborne.
I 've had a problem trying to keep roster up to date with many
email address
changes. I am thinking of putting Bill Boyle in charge of
email address
changes and you will have to get his permission to do so. It
would also help
if you would let us know if you go to that Airborne landing
in the sky.
Seriously let me know of any address changes.
I am
including in this mail a download that several members have sent to me.

Hope some how you can help the
picture you sent of the helmet on a grave
marker, The printing was so small
and appeared smudged, I couldn't make
it out.??? Tom McAvoy also a comment
for anyone that wonder why
Paratroopers didn't couldn't jump from gliders.
They were so so fragile
it would not be able to take the stress of men
running down the aisle to
jump??? It really bothers me for an Author to
print such foolishness. not
haveing any idea if it could be true. and so
many people take stories
they read in books as true Yes it has to be
true I saw an account of it
in so & so's book.???Tom McAvoy

Yes, we got the download and on AOL the download
comes through in "picture
gallery". In the download file, it is a
little blurred, but in "picture
gallery" it is very clear. I guess it
is a matter of what type photo reader
everyone has on their computer.

Ben, I have scanned the booklet by Col Graves issued at Joigny
in Mar 45
giving his interpretation of the history and accomplishments of
the 517th to
that time. The purpose for doing this is so that I can
distribute it to
those who are interested. I will be happy to email
the entire booklet to
those who request it. Those who are on a limited
space email facility
probably will not be able to receive it. It will
be sent as an attachment in
the jpg format. It is scanned pages, which
is the same as photographs
Photos take a lot of space. My apologies to
those who cannot receive it. I
have no solution to solve the
problem. To receive it, just send me an email
and ask for it.
For simplicity we will call the booklet "Attack". I also
have the
capability to scan in other formats if necessary. Most people have
the
ability to read the .JPG format.
I have scanned it at low
DPI.(Dots per Inch) As I have scanned it , it can
be stored on 3
ea 3 1/2 disks. (1.4 meg ea.). This is normal for a 3 1/2 HD
(high density) disk. Would be happy to answer any questions if I
can. Let
me hear from you.

Hi Ben,
We are happy you got the
roster in good shape. Someone tried to download them
before, it may have
been Ed Flannery but I am not sure. We didn't download it
as we have our
copy.
I talked to Mardy and she is such a sweet and funny lady. We all hope
all
will go well with Merle.
We are booked with the Senior Coupons from
here to Minneapolis but we are
waiting to see our daughter in SanFransco
area as she works for Northwest
Airlines. She is on a lay off which is
supposed to voluntary for three
months. She is about ready to retire as she
has a lot of years with them
They are not helping with family fares these
days and we can't go on "stand
by" which would be the way she could help. I
am hoping she can get some kind
of vouchers so we can get something off the
$425 each fare we have to pay. I
have the schedule that will connect with
our Delta Airline. If not we will
just have to pay that money. I don't want
to wait too long as we will need to
get seats both ways from Minneapolis to
Bismarck and back.

Dear Ben:
I am sending you a copy of a letter I
received which is self-explanatory I
informed Mr. Berry of the website
and also informed him I was furnishing you
a copy of his letter. Some
of the men reading Mail Call may recall the names
of the pathfinders the
517th used during the southern France invasion.
As you see, I am sending
copies of this to others that were in a position to
know who some of these
men might have been.

Dear Mr. McMorrow,
I appreciate your taking the time with me this afternoon regarding
the
search for Pathfinders. Judging from the veterans already
contacted I think
this is going to be a very unique and informative
program.**
The production house
is Digital Ranch, which has produced some 30
programs under the
show title Suicide Missions., and these are aired on the
History
Channel. They have done a number of other historical documentaries,
but I would be remiss if I misquoted which channels or show formats they
appeared under.
Suffice it to say that I
opted to get involved with this project after
reviewing their WW2
work. I am very critical of what I see being put out as
history, and
these guys do an exceptional job. I believe I mentioned the
recently
produced program, SARGE! This was Produced and Directed by Mike
Mathis from Digital Ranch who will be doing the Pathfinder program.
This past December I had the pleasure of working with Mike
on a short
twenty minute Pathfinder segment for a forthcoming Suicide
Missions show
which I have just been advised will air on June 3rd. It
is entitled: Unsung
Heroes of D-Day. Besides the Pathfinder
segment, it will include segments
on NCDU's( the Navy beach demolition
teams), and the British Airborne at
Merville, France.
As I mentioned I am acting in the capacity of "bird dog"--they call
it
Associate Producer. I have done quite a bit of independent research
on
Pathfinder operations, mostly in the Normandy and Holland campaigns, and
they
seem to think I'm some sort of specialist! My job is to locate
Pathfinder
veterans for this expanded one-hour Pathfinder video production.
It is the intention of this particular History
Channel program to follow
the development and use of the Pathfinders through
all the campaigns of
Europe. Beginning with the development aspects
carried out by the Lt. Jack
Norton (now LtGen. Retired), the first
Pathfinder operation in Salerno,
Normandy, Southern France, Holland,
Bastogne, the Rhine and at Prum, Germany.
In
contacting you today, it is my hope that you may have in your
Association
some veteran members who participated in Pathfinder operations,
who might
contribute their recollections to this program by way of a video
taped
interview. My focus for the 517th RCT is Southern France, Operation
DRAGOON, but if you determine that any of your members participated as
Pathfinders in any of the later operations I would, of course, be anxious to
have the opportunity to speak with them.
The
Producers at Digital Ranch will be in contact with the men you
recommend to
me, and will square away logistics for the interview process.
They
seek to make the interview process as convenient as possible for the
veterans who wish to participate.
My thanks
again for your consideration in taking my call this
afternoon. And may
I extend to you and the members of the 517th my personal
thanks and
admiration for your military service.
Very Best
Regards,
David R. Berry
