Mail Call!
Would you like to hear regularly from other members and friends of the 517th? Ben Barrett has organized an email-based mailing list for 517th members and families who are interested in hearing regular updates from other 517th members. These "Mail Calls" are sent out periodically, generally about once or twice per week, as news is received. Each Mail Call message includes a collection of other notes received from those on the mailing lists. Notes are mostly just news about personal events or items that may be of interest to others. Nothing fancy, just a way to keep in touch. If you would like to be added to the Mail Call list and receive these mailings, just send a note to Ben Barrett at mailcall@517prct.org. or Ben517@aol.com Include your email address, as well as any personal news that you would like to share with the others. |
Note that the WACs on the left are sorting mail for Units 504-598.
There is probably plenty of mail for the 517th soldiers in this picture.
Dear Ben:
With the information provided by Cecil Doty (Mail Call 574), I was able to call Gerald Moore, Lt. Harry F. Moore’s younger brother. He was glad to hear from Cecil and me and provided some additional information. Harry was born in 1922, and graduated from El Dorado, Kansas High School. He enlisted in the Army shortly after graduation. He was stationed in Texas and married a young lady there. They had no children. The Army recognized Harry’s leadership qualifications and sent him to artillery OCS (Officers Candidate School). He graduated, attended Jump School and was assigned to the 460th. Harry’s father, also named Harry, was in World War I and participated in many American Legion activities. Gerald named one of his sons Harry. The name Harry F. Moore lives on in Kansas. He deserves to have his name on that stelle at the entrance of village of Trans en Provence (Var-France). In its liberation he gave his life.
