Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.

Since there has been talk about medal is this mail call, I have a question.  Where can I purchase a French Croix de Guerre medal with silver gilt star in this country (USA).  Or do I have to contact the French Embassy to obtain one of these medals?

Hi Ben:

 Chris Lindner

I just wanted to say that in addition to Darrell Egner’s idea of adding the spouses name to the roster I think Dorothy McKenzie has a GREAT IDEA FOR THE WIVES TO WRITE IN.  As we all know behind every good solider there is also a good soldier’s wife or girlfriend.  Trying to imagine what the soldier’s of the 517th went through is hard for me to fathom but it is also just as hard for me to imagine what the wives went through not knowing what was going on and not hearing from their spouses for long periods of time.  Unfortunately my Mom did not even know my Dad when he was in the war, so now that my Dad has passed away so long ago and my Mom doesn’t know what went on with my Dad because he didn’t talk about it I only have the members of the 517th Family to tell me what things were going on during my Dad’s WWII days.

orothy and Darrell thanks for your suggestions and I for one would love to hear some of the stories from the 517th women.

Thanks Ben, Bob, Tom, Bob C and everyone else who is doing so much to give me and others the chance to learn how it really was and is.

Ben,

I received a letter from two guys from England, a father and his son, who are asking for my personal experience in our jump of Operation Dragoon. Theytold me they both jumped in the same stick in Holland as part of the 55th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden. They used period uniforms as US Paratroopers and were also very involved in the filming of the TV series, Band of Brothers done in England. They offer to send photos of both of these events.
I sent them our web site and also your name so you may hear from them. Maybe the photos should be sent to our web site if they would do that. Also, I wondered is there was a way for our Thunderbolt to be sent to them. I think one issue would be enough as they are at the same address.
They want to ask me some questions so I am waiting for their answer before I send them what little I can remember about that jump.
For your information their names are: Colin and Ian Dewey

Sound like they are very interested in our history.
Best wishes to all,     Leo Turco

Hi Ben,
Glad you got this clear about the guys. I gave them the web address but as you say they may want more. Some people expect us old guys to remember every detail. From what we hear at the reunions many of them seem to. My mind is foggy when it comes to which battle was which after 5 of them and so long ago. Sometimes hearing the guys I often wonder if I was really there..
I sure wish we could make the reunion but it seems impossible at this time. I went for the other cryo shot and it didn't do me any good so I am still in my chair and having a bad time walking. Lots of pain when I try to stand and have to sleep in my easy chair. Could be a lot worse so can't complain. At least I can walk and do the bathroom things and come to the table to eat. That is more than a lot of people can do. We will miss going to the reunion.
I just happened to think what you meant by the new E-mail address: This is my address but we use Joyce's most the time as she is the one who checks the mail and reads it so keep them coming at JNTurco@aol.com. I thought you meant the English guys address.
Best wishes to you and Fran from Leo and Joyce

My father is turning over in his grave.   The pencil pushers at the Pentagon have decided to court martial a true American Hero, Lt. Colonel Adam West.    Please check the story in the Washington Times out for yourself:  click here:   Army files charge in combat tactic

As a veteran myself, I am outraged at the U.S. Army.  We send men into war, they do their job effectively and then we court martial them in the name of political correctness.   The Secretary of the Army should be fired along with any other military leaders who participate in this demoralizing debacle.    How can we expect young men to volunteer for the military duty if they can not even trust the nation's leaders to do the right thing.

Do the Colonel a favor as I and all of my navy buddies have done -- Call the White House and ask the Commander-In-Chief to step up to the plate.  He can be reached at 202-456-1111.   While you are at it, call your congressperson and give them an earful as well.

I pray that Donald Rumsfeld will have the guts to do the right thing.  Read the article which has also been covered on Fox and MSNBC news this past week.

Ben,
How do I find out when and where my dad, Frederick W. Mitchell joined the 517th(E Co.)? His discharge papers show induction 6 April, 1943. With active duty beginning April 13.
I can find all the battles and campaigns he served in and all the schools he attended. I just can't find where?

He was severely injured Jan 3, 1945 and shipped to Temple, Tx (McClosky Hospital)and was discharged from there with a silver plate in his head and a large portion of the muscle in his right arm gone in July of '45.

Ben--We are moving.  We thought our moving days were over but here we go-another move. We are getting older still and the yard work and maintaining our home doesn't get any easier so we bought a condo near our son in Cleveland, Ohio. After the 15th of November we will no longer be at this address.  The computer will be down for a few days.  Everything takes time.
Our new address will be    Walter and Marie Rommel
                                       6872 Savannah Dr.
                                       North Ridgeville, Ohio   44039
Will contact you after the move.  All the work and the effort you put into "Mail Call" is very much appreciated.  Thanks so much.
