Dear Ben -
Please forward this to Vera Stano -
Vera - Please encourage your parents to come to some of the reunions, and you
should come, too. I even brought my kids and husband to the last one.
Kissimmee, FL is always fun - I've done that one twice with my dad (Allan
Johnson, 596). HQ always seems to have a largeish contingent, and if I am
reading correctly, Ben advises that your dad was with HQ.
As one of the vets told me last year, people don't talk much about the hard
things. Most of the reunion activity is pretty light-hearted. My dad
finally found the unit in 1999, and has said that it's like coming home to
family. Do whatever you can to get them to come.
Warm regards -

You are amazing!!! I asked my poor dad tonight and he couldn't (or wouldn't) remember. THANK YOU!!! Now how do I go about finding information about the 517th and Headquarters 2nd Battalion? I worked late tonight and could hardly wait to get home to see if there was any information from you.
Thank you over and over,
Vera

Hi Ben
I just read the list of those signed up for the reunion an d found that Jan and I are the only ones from the 596th on the list. I can remember when we were always first in attendance or very near the top. Let's go you Engineers and show what we can do.

I have been on you site since I reread your email. Thank you once again. I am so excited about completing my dad's scrapbook. Its a shame I am so "mature" (I have grandchildren of my own. A son that was in the Army, etc) that I am now just learning what my dad truly went through.
How can we ever appreciate you enough?

How about Chris, Darrell, Dorothy, Tom, Dick, Marion, Fritz, Hunter, Jim and others in Hq 2 sending a note to Vera
kstanno@comcast.net for her Christmas scrapbook ?-Ben
Dear Dear Ben,
I am unable to pickup attachments because my husband has blocked them because we have inherited some terrible computer viruses through attachments. I miss so much because of the viruses.
I spoke with my mother after receiving the information from you that my dad was in the Headquarters Co. 2nd Battalion (yes, I saw his name Willard J Kohler.) She too thanks you. I mentioned I am working on a scrapbook of a young Willard Kohler for a Christmas gift. Some of the history I picked up from your website will be included, if that is okay with you. I am so very excited to be able to have some insight into my father's life. Also, I received some correspondence from others that visited your site. Thank you for the opportunity to have these new contacts.
Vera
I don't think I will ever get to sleep tonight (and I have to be at work at 6:00am tomorrow!) All I want to do is read about the 517th and print out the information and work on my scrapbook. Alas, I am too old to pull an all nighter and go to work in the morning! However, I truly want to work on this.
December 16th. Its a day that has so much sorrow for me. On a personal note, this is the 15th anniversary of my 17 year old son's accidental death. He was such a cute kid, would have been a handsome young man. He would have been 32 this past July. So much sorrow for human beings. December 16, 1944 The Battle of the Bulge. Rather ironic that my dad was involved in the Battle and 44 years to the day his grandson died. The date now has more impact on me than ever.
I guess I better get ready for bed (and I haven't even had dinner tonight!) I live in Michigan. It is 10:30 here. 4:30am rolls around rather quickly.
I look forward to being on the mail call. You are a peach! (It is okay to call you tough guys a peach, isn't it?)
Vera
