Hello,

The photo below shows the 517th moving into The Battle of The Bulge. Howard at this time probably remembered the luxury of the 40 hommes & 8 chevaux box cars. This photo was in Life magazine and was also in The Thunderbolt about 20 years ago. Does anyone know who the trooper with the helmet on peering over the back of the truck is. He has a framed copy of this photo  given to him by his family as a Christmas present.

Annual Florida Snowbird Mini-Reunion 2004
January 18-22, 2004

Vera Stano

Dear Ben,

What a wonderful world we live in!!! I am so touched by the generosity of the hearts of those that have responded to me regarding my new obsession (finding all I can about the 517). I can hardly wait for the workday to end (well, that's nothing new...always glad to come home) so I can check my email and see what wonderful new thoughts have been sent my way.

I printed the pages of the book that you forwarded to me, Ben. I put it in a plastic sleeve, made an envelope pocket on one of the pages to tuck the sleeve in. I highlighted my dad's name so he can spot it abit quicker than he would if I didn't. I have the same excitment about Christmas this year that I did as a child...but for different reasons.  I truly feel blessed to be able to give this heartfelt gift.  I just hope that since my dad really never told us much  he is pleased and not riddled with unpleasant memories.

I would love to convince my dad to attend a reunion as Claire Johnson Giblin suggests; however, getting him out the door these days is a challenge in itself. He has become quite the homebody.  Perhaps, a trip of this
nature maybe the difference.

Regards,

Vera

Hi Ben
I would like to know if CLAIRE'S dad AL JOHNSON is coming to the reunion. His name was not on the list BOB issued on the 15th of Dec

Claire Giblin

Yes, Dad is planning on coming.  He doesn't have his flight yet, but we
should finalize that before Christmas.

Best wishes to Don.

was a tough Peach too.  I miss him dearly.  Just tossed out a bicylcle that Ed had purchased for my wife when she was a kid.  Had to do it when she was out of the house - that's how much he meant to us!  Kinda silly, but........

Walt and Marie Rommel
I just came home from the hospital.  Walt has been in the hospital for the last two weeks. He wants to wish all his 517th friends a Very Merry Christmas.
Walt became ill two weeks ago.  He is under the care of the Cleveland Clinic and has been diagnosed with Multiple Melanoma.  They say it is very treatable and is on medication for it now.  He is very weak and in a great deal of pain. As the treatment progresses, the pain should subside.
Have a Merry Christmas Everyone--
                 Walt and Marie Rommel-F Co.
