Subject: MAIL CALL NO. 640
517TH PRCT--FEBRUARY 11, 2004
Hello,
We have added to the website under "Documents" , newspaper
clippings about the 517th maneuvers in 1944 sent in by Michael
Atterburn
Still getting controversy about use of the cricket but as Howard
said " Let the cricket war rage. It has perked up interest and made good
reading". I couldn't tell a cricket from a bedbug. However, this passage from
The Forgetting by David Shenk may explain the different
recalls of what happen sixty years ago. "Long-term memories are durable,
but not unassailable. They can last a lifetime, but from the first moments are
subject to influences from other memories and experience. Inevitably, as they
age and are evoked again and again, all memories change in
character."

Walter is refined to the Health Center. He hasn't been home
since early December. He has Multiple Myeloma. He would like to thank
everyone for their cards and letters. They are so important to him.
His condition is so serious. We are hanging in there with him and
giving him all the support he needs. We wish he could be home with us, but
that is impossible.
His address is Northridge Health
Center
35990
Westminister Ave
North
Ridgeville, Ohio 44039
Please put this in Mailcall and Thank you again for your cards and
letters. I wish I could answer each and every one but that is impossible. I
read Mail Call to him and by the way, he still has his
clicker. Marie Rommel-wife

Ben I was visiting with my father in-law the other day, Olen A Hughes
I co. 517. He was wondering if I could find out about a guy for him, I think he
said the guy was a sec. lieutenant named Riddler. He said they were in Italy,
said it was the first contact with the enemy, a mine field. I know He jumped
behind the germans in the Alps so this must have been very early in his tour.
Anyway he said he saw the mines and that riddler was going to try to cross the
field. He told me he grabbed riddler and said hey man that's a mine field you
can't go threw there. To which riddler replied [watch me] took off full speed
into the mine field, he didn't get to far before he trip one of the mines the
shrapnel hit him in the back, my father inlaw said he spun around ran back out
of the field and fell into his arms. He said the wounds were bad, and that he
often wonder if riddler made it.

I found the 517th page: Other
Comments: I have the separation papers of my
brother Rudolph R Kozisek which had him in Co I 517th prcht inf at the time of
his discharge at Fort Bragg NC. He passed away in 1997 and in the last few
years I have become interested in family history. He didn't talk much about his
army experiences but he did mention that because of Gen Pattons army his last
scheduled jump was cancelled. I don't have any information on how long he was
with the 517th but he took a grade reduction to join the airborne. He had been
with the Balkan operational group in 1944 from what I have been able to
research. I would appreciate any information about his army
service.
