Hello Mr. Barrett,
Hope you are well.
I am the oldest son of Howard Kinder, my name is
Howard Ray Kinder Jr.
I was looking at your site for the first time tonight
and saw my dad's name on the KIA list, but he was not killed in
action.
My dad did lose all ten toes due to frostbite from
being in a foxhole for four days in the bulge, but did not die
there.
He was reported killed in action once because another
soldier had on a pair of his BDU's. He then was given an order to get word home
that it was not him.
This might have caused him to get on that list by
mistake.
He had me and another son John Wesley Kinder, and
lived until June 1991, then suffered a stroke and died a few days later of
congestive heart failure in the VA hospital in
Amarillo,Tx.
My dad was told he might not walk again because of
complications with the skin not wanting to graft good at the time of his
injuries and surguries, but went on to live in several states, played some ball,
run a gas station, was chief of police in Sunray, Tx. for a while, was deputy
sherrif of Moore County, Tx, and owned a liquor store before
retiring.
He lived a good life, just not long
enough.
He considered the men of the 517th to be some of the
best and toughest soldiers our country has ever seen, and I think he was right
on in that assessment.
Sincerely,
Howard Kinder

Howard,
Thanks for the correction. I am glad that your
Dad got to live a long and busy life. I have corrected the website, and
passed the information on to the 517th soldiers via their MailCall.

Hi Ben,
In mid March, I'm taking a group of my students to
Europe. Two of the places we'll be stopping will be Le Muy and Nice.
I know these two towns played a part in the history of the 517 and would like to
know if any of our mail call friends could suggest any sights we should try to
see. I'd also appreciate any contacts there. Finally, if any of the
guys would like me to photograph any specific spots, I'd be glad to.
Thanks and best wishes to all.

I would like to
comment on Tom Cross’s remarks in mail call # 648, second paragraph. Yes sir as a descendant of a
517th paratrooper (Bud Curtis) I am for ever dedicated to preserving
the legacy of the 517th PRCT, and I pledge my support. Thank you all
for your service. We must never
forget. My father is still alive and this
organization has created such a great bond between the two of us. Thanks for making that
possible.

I have had a
wonderful opportunity to speak with some of the 517th troopers who
live here in Utah. One trooper, William Masters, A Company
who I spoke with asked me if I could but on Mail Call a
request. Mr. Masters would like to
know if anyone knows the whereabouts of Chester Koshperger (I hope I spelled
that right), last known residence was in
Pennsylvania. Also Marlo
Jasper, last know residence was New
Mexico. Both men were in A
Company.
Thanks
