What a beautiful story! -- that told by Belgian citizen, Roger Marquet,
about Bob Fordyce in the March 8th Mailcall. There is goodness in this
world.

Dad,
I recently checked out the ASOM website, and see that
they now include a "roll call", where you can look up info on various units and
even individuals. (Although they do want a donation if you include a
picture or extra personal info.)
But there is no info at all about the
517th. They have some info about every other infantry, engineer and
artillery unit, but 517, 460 and 596 do not even show up.
Which leads me
to another idea -- Would it be worth creating a similar personal history on our
own web page, where soldiers or relatives could submit their own bio, photos,
etc.? Sort of like what went into the 517th book printed in the 90s.
Thoughts?
Bob B.

Ben, my father-in-law Olen A. Hughes I co. would like
to know if anyone remembers a spear head mission at Anzo beach. this is what he
remembers, He was in a boat sitting at the very front the other men were telling
him he was to far forward, that the Germans would have a bullet with his name on
it. To which he replied they don't know how to spell Hughes. When i ask him what
kind of boat it was and how many men were in it he just couldn't recall, he did
say there was briefing before the mission, in which they were instructed not to
dig in, because of machine cross fire. they had to advance as quickly as
possible. He told me when that boat hit the sand it threw him out, but he landed
on his feet, he said the machine gun fire was instantaneous with his feet hitting
sand, he said he just kept running, he said they were fixed machine set in a
cross fire. the thing that really got him was when he finally turn around there
was nobody. To this day he doesn't know if the machine gun got everyone or if
they dug in and the mortar fire which pepper the beach just a little later got
them. He said sometimes he thinks its a dream because he can't remember what
happen to him after this. But then he said that bullet that hit my knee and the
two that went threw the back of my shirt that wasn't no dream. He does know he
got off that beach some how, Because he jumped into southern France. Hope to
hear from
anyone.

Virginia...Congratulations! Never heard of the
West Coast Airborne Association. Do they have a Email address? Since you
attended one of their luncheons I'm sure you met some of the members. Did anyone
mention the 517th or did anyone claim to have been a member of the 517th.
I'm sending this communication to Ben517. He may know.

There are many Airborne reunions throughout the
country. Why not attend the West Coast Reunion for the 517 April 19
?
