Attached is an article published in the
Worthinton Ohio local newspaper dated June
6, 1946 about my cousin's (Dick Lynam) award of the Silver Star. Thought
you would want this for your records & history. He was killed in Belgium 5
Jan 1945. I have some other items including letters & a picture taken
in Nice that I will send to you. The picture quality is not great as the
newspaper is old & turning yellow & coming apart. Thanks for
the work you are doing to preserve the history of this great unit

Ben, As you know my
Dad gave me his letters he wrote home to his mother during the war. In reading a letter dated, Saturday,
September 30, 1944, Col de Braus, France, my Dad
wrote: “It will be pay day again in a couple of
days and we get $30.00 back pay on that combat badge we won fighting in
Italy. It pays $10.00 every
month.” In speaking
with my Dad he remembers being paid $10.00 per month for having the CIB (Combat
Infantry Badge). In my service in
the Army I do not remember an infantryman being paid extra money for having a
CIB. Could the $10.00 per month be
“combat pay” that everyone got for being in a combat zone? Does anyone know the answer to this
question?
