Hello,
Still trying to get organized after California trip. May have lost
some mail
I want to get the good news about Joe Miller out
now.
Ben
Ede Miller
Dear All: At last, after a LONG month, good news to
report. The doctor didn't think that Joe was quite ready for release but
knew how unhappy he was in Clatsop Care, so Joe came home last night. He
has been great--still on oxygen, of course, but moving well, eating again, doing
all of the good things. Physio therapy will be coming 3 times a week which
is great--monitoring O2 , exercising, etc. The day has been fantastic for
me, also--spending 6-8 hours at the hospital really takes a big part of the
day. Many thanks to all of the prayers and good wishes that have come this
way--it has been fantastic to have such support--Much love to all from sunshiny

Ben, and 596ers,
Actually, the subject is Chablis, (or the town
where the 596 stayed after
coming back from Berstein)
When Claire and I
and my brother-in-law (Claire's uncle) visited France in
1999 I could not
find what I remember as Chablis. The town is not the town
that I remember. We
went up and down the river but could not locate
it. Several people who we
spoke to could not remember Americans staying there
but they knew that
Americans jad been there during WWI.
So I appeal to any 596ers who have found
it for directions. All I know for
sure is that it was between Auxerre and
Tonnerre.
Joe Senter said at the reunion at Benning that he and Mose had
found it, but
they are both gone now.
My apologies for spelling Bergstein
and "had" incorrectly. I'm a slow
learner on this machine and I can correct
only by backspacing.
Anyway, if anyone has directions to what we called
Chablis, I would sure
appreciate hearing from you.
Regards,
Allan

For George Arrendondo.......Regarding your grandfather being a
POW at Le Muy. In the heat of battle where operations change rapidly
particularly in our case of parachute assault. It is doubtful that your
grandfather would be considered a bona fide POW.
In the case of the Le Muy
operation and which I have previously mentioned about in a past email that
Captain Dearing, our Regimental S-2 was also captured at the same time, and
while in captivity brilliantly negotiated with the enemy to give up and
surrender and release the troopers held. Surprisedly the Germans
capitulated. Incidentally, some of my demolition men were also captured at
the same time and taken to Le Muy.

Eirwin Scott
Thanks for your reply. I have a couple of
questions:
1 - Has anyone written a history of that that 1st Squad Third
Platoon CO D?
2 - Is there a list of all who where in that Squad? and those still
living?
3 - Do you know when he was evacuated to England as a result of his
frozen feet?
4 - Do you have any idea of his medals & awards or where
information on them may be found?
I would like to develop his story for all our family to
have.
Thanks again.
By the way, where are you located now?

T Scott Aktinson:
Scott was in my squad 1st squad third platoon CO D. he also was
an original member of CO D. From Toccoa Georgia to Occupation of
Germany.
I am sorry to hear of Scott's Passing.
Scott was not a very big man but he had the Heart and Guts of a
Lion. No one but him would know how he suffered thru basic training in Toccoa.
He stuck with us thru every thing.
He was Airborne All The Way.

Ben,
I am sorry but I do not remember talking to Dick Spencer. Maybe it was someone else. Does anyone remember James’s father
Rudolph Cervantes?

Ben,
Mother’s Day is coming up on May 9th in about a couple of
weeks. I was going through some
letters my father wrote home to his mother during the war. I found one from
Camp
Toccoa, dated
6 May
1943. It is a typed letter with a mother’s day
message that was written by the 517th chaplain, then
signed by my Dad. Does anyone
remember having this form letter and sending it to their mothers? I thought it was very nice of the
517th to be so considerate to have the men send this letter home to
their mothers. In the 27 years I
served in the military I was never given anything like this. Just goes to show what a class outfit
the 517th was and still is

Thank you for the website and all the information. My father,
Coy F. Bush,
was in Hdqtrs.Co. 1st Battalion. I was directed to your
site by a man at
the D-Day Museum yesterday. I live in New Orleans. When are
the reunions
held?
Again, thanks.
Sincerely,

Dear Friends and Family, I understand that some of you are
not
receiving mail I forward, most of which is from Willie King (Col,
USA,
Ret) . Please let me know if you received the John Keery stuff. Some
of
it I haven't been able to download myself . I haven't figured out
why
yet. I have also fwdd items from Bob Christie, 517th Sec-Treas. Do
any
of the Family want to get on the receiving end of the 517th Mail-Call
?
If so , write Ben Barrett @ : Ben517@aol.com . Some of you i know Ben
.
He started our 517th mailcall several years ago, and is now at
about
mail-call N0 670. He and his son Bob have done marvelous service
to all
of us troopers , keeping us joined (band of brothers, in our own
right)
and recording for posterity, much more of our personal history.
A/BBL,
Bob

Thanks, Ben,
How is the 517 PIR different from the
RCT? I appreciate your response.
Take care,

Hi, Ben -
We're on our way to France for the
observance of the anniversary - just bought the tickets this week.
Where
are Dad's fellow 517ers staying? We'd like him to have a few friends
around. I know that there are still rooms at the hotel that Eric Renoux
recommended, but if there are a bunch of people at another hotel, that might be
better.
Please let us know ASAP, those that are going - we need to
reserve soon.
We arrive August 13 into Nice.
Thanks to all
