Subject: MAIL CALL NO. 682 517TH PRCT--APRIL 30,2004

Hello,
I may have missed including  some mail and answering guestbook entries and if so send them to me again. Thinks can get confusing at times. Some items with photos were too long for this "Mail Call". Will include them in a later "Mail Call" if I don't forget.

really hate to send this message, but we have been
back to the hospital in OKCity. This time next door to
the heart hospital at Mercy Hospital. Jesse began to
have trouble breathing & Kristie & I took him to see
the cardiologist.  He immediately called in a
pulmologist (lung spec.) and they began breathing
treatments & kept him on oxygen for 4 days.  They also
have him on blood thinner. (One was a injection in the
stomach).  They said that because of the fibrillation
of the upper heart that the blood could pool in the
lower heart & blood clots form. so the thinner.  As
soon as the blood was thin enough & he could breath
without the oxygen & could walk the hall they sent us
home.(6 days) His appetite is some better now. As you
know you do not get any rest in the hospital, so we
are both very tired. I still have not recovered
completely from my fall. and of course our rooms have
been as far from the elevators as you can get. I am
now getting to chauffeur Jesse.  He took care of me
for 3 months so now it it my time. I hope this ends
here & we don't start over with him having to take
care of me again.  Again thanks for all the thoughts
and prayer. Don't stop now. We still need you every
day.  We go back to the Dr's next Tues. May 4th.  Do
blood work up & all that jazz.  Jesse says he feels &
looks like a pin cushion.  They have really had a time
trying to get into his blood vessels. they keep
rolling & blowing.  I know that so many of you have
been in the same boat that he is in right now that you
know what he looks like. almost one big bruise.  Keep
in touch.  Thanks again, Love LOU

Dear Ben,
I thank you for helping me in my search for news about my
brother, Jim Birder. I
plan to follow the search following the directions you sent
to me. In the meantime,
I have also heard from Lud Gibbons as well as Howard
Hensleigh. I have you to
thank for this also.
I do now feel I am well on my way in becoming
"re-acquainted"  with Jim.
Sincerely,
Terry (Birder) Casey

Thanks, Ben,
How is the 517 PIR different from the RCT? I appreciate your response.
Take care,
Diane
Thanks for the quick response again. What is Mail Call? Sure, I'd like to
receive that. Thank you Howard also.

Ben: Any member could answer Diane Bush Steckler, but here goes. The 517th PIR was the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The 517th PRCT was the parachute regimental combat team composed of the 517th PIR, the 460th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion and the 596th Parachute Combat Engineer Company.

I am not sure Rudolph Cervantes was the Cervantes in G Co. about whom Dick Spencer had so many humorous stories. But, I was the guy who put it in Mail Call. There were some people like Bill Mauldin who made humor out of the miserable plights in which an infantryman frequently found himself. The G Co Cervantes found and made humor out of his situations. I remember four stories from personal knowledge and Dick’s retelling them that I will add to Mail Call from time to time.

Keep the questions coming. We are glad you have an interest in the outfit and men we love. Sometimes we can answer them. God bless, Howard Hensleig

Larry and Leahann Larson

We were wondering if we could get on the newsletter list.  My dad was a member of the 517th.  Jack J Larson.

Thanks
Larry and Leahann Larson

Ben,

Jack J Larson was in HQ. CO. 1st Battalion.  He was a Staff Sergeant when he discharged after the war.  He passed away May 26th, 1981.  We are trying to find out as much information about him as we can as my husband was 12 when Jack died.  He didn't get to ask all those questions that now being older he would like to know.  We have been trying to find out how to get ahold of his military records.  We requested them a few years back and only received his VA records.  If you know any thing about him or need more info that we may have please let us know.
Thank you for your time.
Leahann Larson

Comments: Spoke with Nicola Esposito of HQ CO, 3rd BN while attending the funeral of my grandmother. He is my grandfather's cousin. We compared experiences (his of Europe, mine of Iraq). Nice to find a relative who is a fellow paratrooper.

Thank you, I will contact him and see if he would like to receive the mailings.  I'm sure he will, he had many fond memories that he shared with me.
