Hello,

Good news about Joe Miller.

Ben

Bob Dalrymple from Edith Miller

Ben, I have received permission from Edie Miller to forward this report on
Joe's condition to you . Bob

Joe came home from his episode at the hospital because of insulin shock on Saturday and is becoming stronger--today was quite a good day.  They feel the shock was because of one medication for his diabetes called glucovance and is no longer on it.  His blood sugar is more elevated than I would like but we will see the doctor again Thursday and see what he says.  Our hospital foundation is having their annual golf tournament and auction (our little town raised $150,000 last year--cleared over $100,000 for the hospital) and have asked Joe and me to be the honored guests.  They asked us in Feb long before all of this occurred so we have been wondering if Joe would be able to attend the dinner.  It looks now as if he will so am hopeful of that as I know that he would like to.  He was on the board and helped set up the charitable giving for the foundation.  Hold good thoughts that he will continue to get stronger!!  Many good wishes--Edith

Ben & Tom, my friend and former Como platoon HQ, 1st trooper, Art Vesco, lives at 11464  coloma Rd., Gold River, CA  95670-8253. email javco4@aol.com
I just printed Tom Reber,s update on the pdf word roster of the 517th members, family and friends.  The above good trooper is not thereon listed, which is why I am sending this three way mesage to Art, Tom and Ben517.  Art may or may not care whether his name is listed but I am assuming that he should be listed as a bonafide 517er.  The more the merrier!    There are about 60 per appx 22 1/4 pages on the current roster!
Art, Ben will probably send you his 'MAIL CALL' email but you can ask him to remove your name if you don't want to receive them.  The following is the website of Tom's roster which you can either check out at the site (with my eyes I had difficulty) or print the pages which I could read easier.  Walt

Tom Reber has just updated the roster. It is a good idea to check the roster
www.517prct.org/roster.pdf  to make sure that you are on it and all information is correct.

Ben, I have seen notes from you on Mail Call which urged people to write. You may have been implying, to get Mail Call write to Mail Call. I have pretty much felt that I have little or nothing wroth writing about, but as I read many worthwhile notes from friends and relatives and unknown others I have decided to write about 517th friends or buddies. There is a difference between friends and Buddies. We had many friends but not many who were really "buddies." If this does not make sense, so be it. I'm going to start by writing about a best friend who was a notch or two above a friend and a half notch below a buddy. He was the first would be paratrooper that I really got to know. I was a late comer to Toccoa and was assigned to a barracks in Company E, which was empty. The company was on the rifle range. They returned a couple days later whooping and hollering. I sneaked into my bunk somewhat afraid of the loud mouth dirty troops. No one spoke to me, a skinny green horn. Then Clarence Billy Jones came to me talking about how well he did on the range. He was at least tied for number one on the range. He showed me how to take the M-1 apart and put it back together. I was impressed. Jones was called C. B. by his friends and he had many friends and a few buddies. He was strong and a good soldier. We became good friends and went through Italy, France and into the battle of the Bulge, where he was killed in the battle for Mont de Fosse in early Jan. 1945. Had he not been killed he would probably be burning up Mail Call with his stories. He was returned to his home town, Salisbury, NC, where he now rests.
I wonder if any of you had the pleasure of knowing, C. B. Jones. I'm glad that I did.
Next I will write about a buddy.

Ben,

I was wondering, when the guys were assigned to a "Stick" were those the guys that they jumped with every time? or did the group change with each jump?
 Leahann

Thanks for the help.  I also sent an email to Tom.  I was looking through the roster and found that he had my FIL listed but by the wrong name "Lansing" instead of "Larson".  So I let him know of the mistake and that Jack had passed but that we would like to be on the list in his place.

The reason I was asking about the "stick" was because I started reading Battling Buzzards and there is a picture in it of a Stick and my FIL is in the picture.  So that led me to wonder if that particular group of men were together at every jump or if it was random, get on a plane and jump.

Thanks again

Hello Ben

The dates for the reunion are 15 August - 19 August, 2005.  As time moves closer to those dates we plan on keeping all concerned updated as much as possible.  We will do this thru the Thunderbolt and Mail Call.

The Best To You Ben. And by the way Ben, you do a top notch job with Mail Call.

Thanks much

In regard to the above flag:

Between the field where the flag is planted there are 9+ miles of flower fields that go all the way to the ocean. The flowers are grown by seed companies. It's a beautiful place close to Vandenberg AFB. Checkout the dimensions of the flag.

The 2004 Floral Flag is 740 feet long and 390 feet wide and maintains the proper Flag dimensions as described in Executive Order #10834. This Flag is 6.65 acres and is the first Floral Flag to be planted with 5 pointed Stars comprised of White Larkspur. Each Star is 24 feet in diameter; Each Stripe is 30 feet wide. This Flag is estimated to contain more than 400,000 Larkspur plants with 4-5 flower stems each for a total of more than 2 million flowers. You can drive by this flag on V Street south of Ocean Ave. in Lompoc, CA.
