Another Note to Dick Havill -- You are right; Flave Carpenter was 1st
Sgt. of I Company at Manhay. He received a battlefield commission,
possible for his actions at Manhay. I remember his being universally
respected. Although I am not sure I can speak for your guys regarding your
top kick. Give us any more details you remember about the 27th of December,
1944 through January 1, 1945, but don't take that as a limitation.
Highest regards, HH
To: Richard "Dick" B. Havill, PFC "I" Company
I want to thank you, Dick, for taking the time to reflect on almost 60
years ago and express your "recollections" of that fateful morning, 27 Dec
1944. I am still amazed that any of you BRAVE men from "I" Company made it
through that morning alive. Dick, if you have any "memories" about my
Uncle Floyd A. Stott I'd appreciate hearing from you, good or bad. I
copied the note you sent to Mail Call and have been saving, on a disk, the other
"memories" your buddies in the 517th have put on Mail Call or sent me
directly.
God Bless You! Kent Floyd Immerfall

Ben: A few more recollections for H. Hensleigh. Before we got in
position to attack the town
we passed through a line of
soldiers, I asked one of them what outfit
they were in, and he
said
they were in the 82nd airborne. I understand the Artillery
said they
had Manhay zeroed right in
and we could get real
close. ( we were too close }. I wouldn't get up
after the second
barrage
but when I heard Sgt. Carpenter cussing at us to get up
and follow him,
I thought if he is crazy
enough to go in, I
guess I will go along with him. Flave Carpenter was
a regular army man
from
Arkadelphia Arkansas, He received a Battlefield commission
and retired
after the war. I first met
him at camp mackall
, he got us out in the mornings for roll call. I
don't recall ever hearing
why
got his commission, but he sure deserved one for that
night.

Like so many others, I am looking for the men who served with my Father. His
name was Donald "Goon" Eugene, and he was a member of the Regimental
Headquarters Company, Intelligence and Reconnaissance Unit NCO 631, under Captain
Al Dearing. I live in the Washington DC area and would love to meet and
reminisce with those who are coming to town for the WWII memorial ceremonies.
Thank you for your service to our country.

Hi Ben,
Yes I always read the emails and so enjoy
them. I hope to attend the August 2005 reunion with my son Rick, and am
looking forward to meeting all of you.
I will be happy to send a book to Margaret
Lincoln.

Comments: Hello, my name is Vanessa. My grandfather served in WWII
company b 517th paratroopers. He attended most of the reunions until he passed
in July of 1992. I was wondering if anyone knows him or just can contact me
regarding your experiences with him. I found this website so interesting. I am
trying to find info for my grandmother Jean Schumacher regarding Edmond Jordan,
his dear friend.
