Ben,

Thank you for your prompt response.  It is a pleasure to hear from you.  I would like to thank you for your service.  Your generation has always been heroes to me.  You were truly citizen soldiers.  I am a third generation combat infantryman with 12 years in the Army, and I am always put in awe when I read, hear, or watch old accounts of the battles fought in WWII.  There will never be another war like that one.  My grandfather passed away in 1980.  My father served in Vietnam, but he and Papaw never traded war stories.  I always remained very close with my grandmother until her passing in late 1999.  Sources within the family have always been a little confused when it came to my grandfathers service in WWII.  He never spoke of it much with anyone.  I do know that he had some nasty scars on his back that were said to be from hand to hand combat.  His DD 214 has him listed as receiving 4 bronze stars with "V" device, CIB, jump wings, and a purple heart.  I also have confirmed through one of my uncles that he made the jump into southern France with the 517th.  My Grandmother also regularly received the "Thunderbolt".  But she never knew what specific units he was in.  She said that he moved around to a few different units.  I assume they were all within the 517th.  He went in with them to Italy, and left them in December 44.  I am very glad you run this website and I check it every chance I get for new information.  I appreciate your help with my endeavor.  If I can be of any assistance to you in any way, please let me know.  Also, thanks for adding me to the Mailcall.

Sincerely,
SSG Michael S. Mullins

Dad,

I posted the 460th history by Fred Brown, as ent by Lou Darden.

http://517prct.org/documents/460_history/460_history.htm

But 1.)  It is difficult to read.  I could use a bigger or clearer copy.

2.)  It is almost exactly the same as the 460th Short History as published by the Airborne Quarterly, which we already have on the web site, with a few changes at the end:

http://517prct.org/documents/short_history/460_short_history.htm

This looks like it might be the original version, which was re-edited for the Airborne Quarterly.

True as Steel

This was the motto as given the regiment by our original C.O., Col. L.A. Walsh.
As far as I know there was none other.

I do recall running around Camp Toccoa hollering "True as steel" as some sort of rallying cry as mentioned by Bill Boyle but somewhere along the way it seemed to fade away.  It might work on that bench, however.  Hang in there Ben, thanks for keeping the lights on.      JL

Ben,
For those that are following the upcoming 517th return to Southern France vintage 15Aug, 2004, please note the following.
The information relating to those that are to attend has been posted, however more or less on an individual basis. For whatever purposes, we all need a jump manifest (roster) of all those that are attending-so I have taken this step and it will be circulated to those concerned. For additions/changes please contact me so that we can coordinate the list and ensure that it is current in the short time remaining
