Gail Douglas ( Daughter of Herbert Jeff )

Ben --

I'm saddened to notify you that my father, Herbert Jeff passed away early yesterday morning (Monday, 9/13).  Dad celebrated his 80th birthday on August 13th with a big family gathering on the Gulf Coast of Florida.  . . and he and mother celebrated their 56th anniversary on Sept. 1st.  As recently as the day before his death, he was in great humor and seemed to be feeling great.  He left this world on his own terms, which was very much his style.  He awoke in the early morning hours on Monday and after telling Mother that he was having a little trouble breathing, gently slipped away within a few minutes.  Though we'll miss him terribly, we all feel that this was the way he would have chosen.

Knowing the closeness Dad felt to the members of the 517th, I'm certain he would want me to let all of you know.  Over the past couple of years, Dad has enjoyed receiving the Mail Call very much!  I was Dad's "computer operator" and "email retriever".  At some point during most of our daily check-in calls, Dad would ask:  "Do I have a Mail Call today?"  As Dad read the Mail Calls, he would share some of the stories with me and then would elaborate on his own memories of the events and individuals in the stories.  After Mother & Dad attended the 517th Reunion in Oklahoma City, they both came home with many stories to share.  Myself, my sister and my 2 brothers and all of dad's 8 grandchildren have many memories of Dad's great stories about the 517th.  Know without question, that his memories will live on with these next generations who will proudly remember my father along with all the brave soldiers of the 517th.

Attached is a picture of Dad in his glory days along with his obituary listed in the Birmingham News today.

Ben, I received a letter from Margaret Bales Lavelle, daughter of Captain Thomas O. Bales. Her father passed away Feb.2, 2003. He was in Reg. Hq. He is still listed in the roster. I will call Margaret to see if she wants to receive the Thunderbolt and Mail Call. If so ,I will send you her email address. We are starting to get winds and rain from "Ivan", but we are 300 miles from him so will probably get much lighter winds and lots of rain. Bob

Ben, When I find a new member of our 517th Family it exites me. I would like to introduce Margaret Bales LaVelle, daughter of Capt. Thomas O. Bales. I received an interesting letter from her and called her this morning. She would like to receive the Thunderbolt and be added to Mail Call. Her email address is Margaret.LaVelle@dor.ga.gov. You will probably be hearing from her very soon. She sounds like a gentile Southern lady. I invited her to come to our reunions. Her father was in Reg.Hq. Bob

Bob Barrett,

It looks like these ISPs all use the same spam filte program -- spamcop.  Spamcop must keep track of where spam mail comes from, and if the source exceeds a threshold, they will block ALL email from that sending location.  It appears that they have recently received too much spam from aol.are and therefore they are now blocking email coming from aol, at least temporarily.

Hopefully, they will reset themselves once the level comes down, and it will reopen. It is nothing that you did.

Bob

Ben:  For some reason known only to this compute it sent you a half baked message.  We have had you in mind as we recover from our packing everything up, moving it and then trying to reorganize it along with the rest of our lives.  So far we are happy we took the leap and trust you and your family are also taking a new lease on life.  I may try a new Internet hook up, but thought it best to keep some things the same for a while.  We have missed getting Mail Call, but are catching up.  It adds a lot to our lives as it does for so many others.  Bob Christie is doing a great job with the Thunderbolt and that helps those who are not on the net.  It is good to know you are still on the job and that our G Co. buddy Harger is young at heart and keeping those young sky divers on the ball.  God bless,  HH

Bill Elliot
