Thank you for your prompt reply to
my singing the guest book. I spoke to my
uncle tonight and relayed the
information to him. He had a story about the
attack on Manhay that you
might enjoy. The way he remembers it, his unit was
moving up to a holding
position in the dark of night. They were dressed in
uniforms that were
anything but uniform. He said that the men wore
blankets, parts of
German white snow camouflage, grease paint, branches,
etc. The only thing
they had in common was their jump boots. As they moved
toward the
front, they had to pass through troops that were dug in, awaiting
the
battle. Everyone had their night vision and moved easily through the
mechanized troops that were there. My uncle overheard one of the men
in the
fox hole say to his buddy "Who the f..... are these guys!!??"
The buddy
replied "Shhhh, there're paratroopers!" My uncle said that
he felt like he
was ten feet tall! One of his many proud moments
as a member of the 517th.
Thanks again, Bill Gearon for my uncle 1st
Lt Raymond D. Gearon.

Dear Mr.Barrett,
I just wanted to thank you again for keeping my name, as well as
my
Grandfather's name and information, on the web-site for the 517th members
to
see. I'm sure that, one day, we will run accross someone from F.Co.
that
knew him and maybe even another soldier who was a good friend of
his. I know
that there has to be some old friends out there because
everyone who knew my
grandfather, seemed to have loved him. He had a
very magnetic personality
and he was a very honorable man.
I also read the message that you posted on the web-site
regarding the
"Mail Call" section. It seems as though you have spent
alot of your personal
time to help reunite alot of soldiers who were friends
in the 517th (and/or
their families) and I think that it's a really
commendable thing that your
doing and it says alot about you as a
person. (not to mention all of the
time and effort that you spent
trying to help me find someone who knew my
grandad.)
Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Chris Liddell

The operation went off real good. The Doctor
afterwards was asked by Our Son
(Russ)and Wife( Naomi ) if I was to be put
on a strict diet and he says
somebody that is 81 + should not have to diet
to live that long. HA!
Let him eat whatever he wishes. I liked him right
away. But this AM after a
good shower and a good night's rest in my own bed
was an upper.
Thanks! For your concern will keep you posted if any thing out
of the
ordinary crops up The best of health to every one. Monday Afternoon
From The Sunny south, Roy & Naomi Herren
I told Fran
about the diet bit.My wife who was an army nurse in WW2 said that
she wasn't
too concerned about me having a heart attack and going quick. She
just
didn't want me to have a stroke and have to take care of me.

This information may not be new to surviving veterans
of the 517th however,
all who were awarded a Combat Infantry Medal also
qualify to receive a Bronze
Star. No doubt most, if not all, of the brave
men who served in the 517th
would be entitled to this decoration and
rightfully so! I was reading the
about decorations at The Institute of
Heraldry website via the 517th website
link. Clicked on Other Links to
Web, Military Uniforms and Medals, then The
Institute of Heraldry
and on Bronze Star ribbon. [See: Paragraph 5. (c)
background
information section about the Bronze Star]. My family is trying to
locate
some pictures of other members of the 517th taken in Rome, Paris, and
some
combat pictures that my dad had. Some of them were taken in the winter
of
1945 and they are very graphic (fallen comrades and German solders). I'll
let you know if we find them. Thank you for adding dad's picture and v-mail
to the website. Thanks again for all of your efforts.

Achtung
Minen----
It was my understanding from what was
informally discussed at the Orlando
517 Mini Reunion this past January, when
we were all gathered around the
conference table in the Hospitality Suite,
that Merle was going to open the
subject of future Biannual 517 Reunions for
discussion at the Bismarck
Reunion. If my memory serves me correctly we
talked about exploring the
possibility of establishing a Permanent Reunion
Committee and using the same
geographic and hotel facility for this
purpose-or something along these lines.
I believe I heard
the above discussed before tapping into the Cognac
supplied by Ed Flannery
and his, for the first time in past reunion history,
outstanding and well
equipped airborne bar.
Am I alone on this one?
Regards, Tom

To All: This is a
"fool-on and follow-on" to my last message. I should have
included the
following statement which is now presented: "Regardless of where
the next
Biannual Reunion is held I will be there providing Ed Flannery's
high new
airborne bar standards are met and present."
I tend to get my
priorities mixed up some time. This message is more in
line with my Camp
Toccoa and evermore airborne philosophy.
Regards, Tom
How about it
Ed?The next reunion is now and is in Bismarck. We want Tom to be
there. If
only we could get Bob Christie to do the cooking.

Great mail call. You are really getting
inquiries about relatives that
served in the 517th. I think it is very
commendable that 517th members are
helping fill all these requests whenever
possible.
