Ben:
Here is the correct address for the Daniel Harris that Bob Christie was requesting in above referenced Mail Call No. 799:
                                                     Daniel Harris
                                                     169 Gate Rd.
                                                     Penygroes, Llanelli
                                                    S. Wales SA147RW UK

His address is on the 517th Website 517th PRCT Roster with an incorrect spelling for the word "Penygroes."

Dan Harris joined us in the ETO prior to our return to the ZI in 1945. He was in Co. I when I was C.O. of the 3d Battalion. He was a British citizen at the time and how he became a member of the 517th PIR is an interesting story. He was an outstanding NCO and was repeatedly called to my attention to the extent that I encouraged him to apply for Officer Candidate School which he did. When he graduated from O.C.S. he returned to the 82nd Airborne Division and was assigned to Lt. Colonel Bob McMahon's Battalion in the 504 PIR. At this time the 517th PIR, which had been deactivated in February 1946 at Fort Bragg, was absorbed into the 82d Airborne Division. Most of us were
absorbed into the 505th PIR in place and Bob McMahon was the only exception due to the fact that a Battalion C.O. position was vacant in the 504th PIR and needed to be immediately filled with someone of Bob's experience. A short time later everything changed when the 101st Airborne Division was deactivated as was the 508th PIR and their personnel were absorbed into the 82nd Airborne Division, Luckily most of the now deactivated 517th PIR personnel remained in the 505th PIR except for Bob.

Getting back to Dan Harris, he served in the 504th PIR long enough to be recognized as an outstanding officer. Unfortunately his active military career was shortened by a serious injury suffered in a training accident and he was physically retired from active duty. He later returned to the UK but still came back to the USA for the 517th PRCT Reunions. I believe the last one he attended was the Fort Benning Reunion. He still keeps in touch with many of us by monthly telephone calls and it is a delight to chat with an old comrade who remembers his friends and service in the 517th PIR with pride. Dan is having trouble getting around these days and is unable to make our Reunions but we can count on hearing from him regularly. He is well remembered and admired by those of us who have served with him in the past.

Ben:

When I concluded my publishing of the Thunderbolt at the end of June 2003, I sent Bob Christie the addresses of all the foreign recipients of the paper.  Those residents overseas do not move as often as we do in the States.  The Wales address may have some little part of it incorrect and should be compared with the list I furnished to make certain the two agree.

The $60 dollars I sent to Bob for the proposed memorial in southern France are for those 6 men in Btry C 460th who did not return home with us. Please forward this to Bob since I understand he has a new e-mail address.

Our best wishes to you and the family for all you do to keep us hooked up.
