Hi Ben

I was going through some old stuff and found part of the December 1943
Thunderbolt. It contained an article by Joe David Brown, my good friend and
good writer. It's about the 460th and is interesting.

I can't scan it but I can retype it if you are interested in putting it on
the website. The article is headlined: MULES DISCARDED FOR PLANES IN MOVING
ARTILLERY WEAPONS.

I also found a list of those transferred from 13th Airborne to 82nd on 3
July 1945 before we left for Berlin. Interested?

Hope you had a great turkey day.

Best

Jim

Ben  I cannot remember seeing anything about these guys in Mail Call

Terry  Beardon is a nephew of his, and had ask for any info anyone had
in regard to Arlton (in Mail-Call)  We have run into a brick wall so to
speak?? Arlton was in  I Company  when he lost his life?? I was in H
company and had heard of his accident .

Comments: Happy Thanksgiving. Sitting with my father, 79 year old Thomas E. Garcin. You will find him listed as a private in Company B, 517th. He never talks about it, but their story has been told over and over. These guys are the real deal! Check it out, a book has been written about them: the Battling Buzzards... I'm honored to be with my dad and to honor all the men who served in these units!!! Please respond if you read this!

Ben  I just received this email from someone I know in Holland.  He has a Troop Carrier Museum.  This is the TC Squadron I flew with.  Enjoy Dorothy Errair  Flight Nurse   WW 2

The 61st Troop Carrier Group is cited for outstanding performance of duty in action against the enemy on 11 July 1943.  This organization dispatched 38 paratroop-laden troop carrier aircraft from its base in Tunisia to the enemy stronghold in Sicily despite strong winds, a low haze and the distance of 333 miles over a vast stretch of water to Malta and thence to the Sicilian coast, reached their objective near Gela at the appointed hour.  Upon approaching the Sicilian coastline, the entire serial was suddenly enveloped in an intense barrage of deadly anti-aircraft fire which continued relentlessly throughout the flight, destroying four of the airplanes and damaging others.  Displaying magnificent courage and steadfast determination, they maintained their unarmed, unarmored and unescorted aircraft in close formation to the pin-point objective where they successfully dropped the troops, in many cases making two passes over the drop zone and in some cases three, in order to insure complete and accurate delivery.  By their superb skill and heroic disdain for the countless hazards and extreme dangers confronting them, the officers and men of this group thereby enabling the far reaching disruption of the enemy’s defenses which preceded the beachhead thrust of the ground forces by at least 48 hours.  This operation, involving the first large-scale use of American airborne troops, became the working model for future airborne operations in the European theater of operations.  The gallantry and tenacity of purpose displayed by the officers and men of the 61st Troop Carrier Group in this engagement reflect the highest credit upon the organization and upon the United States Army Air Forces.”

Great issue. We should remember the thoughts sent in.  The quotes especially are what our country is all about and for that we should all be thankful. Amen.

Ben, For all you Buzzards in Hq. 2nd., we finally managed to get Lou Scaringi out of his buzzards nest in Maryland. He is coming to our Florida Snowbird Mini Reunion in January. Maybe we ought to throw him in the pool (just kidding) He has his hotel reservations and is going to the dinner theatre. He is bringing his wife Joyce. Lou was LTC. Seitz radio man.. We will be able to hear some new stories for a change.
