A small tribute to the B.P.O.E. Not the Benevolent Protective
Order of Elks, but some of The Best People On Earth.
Dear Sir,
My name is Stevin Oudshoorn and I live in
Amsterdam, The Netherlands. For
the last 18 years (since age 15) I have been
researching the lives and
deaths of all Allied soldiers killed and/or buried
in The Netherlands in
WW2. Although I always had a great interest in WW2, my
parents once took me
to a military cemetery and I remember walking past the
many rows of white
grave markers and reading the names and ages of these
men. Then I wanted to
know who these men were, what they looked like, what
their lives had been.
Ever since I have been corresponding with veterans,
family members, reading
books and doing research. (After 10 years as a
corporate reporter, this
year I decided to go back to University and study
History, which I am doing
now).
As a tribute to these men I have
started to build a website, on which I
post all my research and material
that is being sent to me by veterans,
family members, fellow researchers,
etc. You can visit my website at
www.basher82.nl to see what I am trying to
do. I want to state that this is
a tribute site and I have no commercial
interest in this. I feel very
strongly about trying to do my part in making
sure that these men and their
sacrifices are being remembered.
Today
I made a list of the 517 PIR men buried in Margraten, the
Netherlands. Doing
research on the internet I came across your website and
am amazed by the
amount of information available here. I had only known
superficially about
the 517th before. As I am researching the lives and
deaths of these men,

I will contact you later about the use of some of your materials, as I
want
to write a correct story, but also wish to gain permission to use any
material on my site before I post it.
One of the men buried in my
country is Pvt Anthony Manley. I just read a
post on your mailcall from
Joseph Martel, E Company, who was his good
buddy. I wonder if it is possible
to get in contact with Mr. Martel (either
directly or through you) in the
hope that I can learn a little more about
Anthony Manley's life and death
that I can put on my website. Any
information would be most welcome, of
course, as I try to make the pages as
personal as possible with as much
information as I can find.
I would be very grateful if you could be of
help in this. I will be in
contact with you shortly.
Looking forward
to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Stevin Oudshoorn

Dear Stevin: I was beside Ca pt. Robert Woodhull when he
was cut down by a
burst of German machine gun fire at Bergstein,
Germany. I have written
about this and it may be on the website.
He was our 3rd Bn. artillery
observer. We were directing artillery
fire at the time. I commend your
efforts to honor these men.
